Take a deep breath.

Ask God to reveal whether you are using his gifts for his glory or allowing them to become sources of pride.

Today’s passage reminds us:

God’s good gifts are corrupted when pride rules our hearts, but his grace restores us to use them for his glory.

3. ✝️ Ezekiel 28:1-19

The ruler of Tyre grew wealthy through wisdom and trade, but his riches made him proud, and he claimed to be a god. The Lord would bring ruthless foreigners to expose him as a mere man and destroy his splendor. Though the king had been created with wisdom, beauty, and privilege, violence and dishonest trade corrupted him. God cast him down, consumed him by fire, and brought him to a dreadful end.

4. 📖 Key Verse

Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground; I exposed you before kings, to feast their eyes on you (v. 17).

5. 📝 Reflection

When I was a child, I heard the story of Solomon in Sunday school, and there was something that my young mind simply could not understand. “If God gave Solomon wisdom, why did he disobey God? Shouldn’t wisdom given by God naturally lead him to obey God? How, then, could Solomon still sin despite possessing the wisdom God had given him?” No matter how much I thought about it, I could not understand. It is no secret that I asked my teacher these questions as soon as they came to mind and was scolded for doing so. Looking back, I suppose I was quite an unusual child.

I once eagerly pursued the wealth and glory of this world. Then, at a certain point in my life, I obeyed God’s powerful calling, embarked on a missionary journey, and eventually attended a theological seminary in the United States. Studying theology would have been difficult even in my native language, so learning it in English was extremely challenging. Old Testament studies were especially demanding. The process of learning Hebrew through English was truly arduous.

During one of those difficult Old Testament classes, we studied the sacrificial system of the Old Testament. As I listened to my professor’s passionate explanation of holiness and purity, I reflected on humanity—neither holy nor clean—in contrast to our holy God. At that very moment, the question I had asked as a child returned to me. Though my understanding was still limited, I began to recognize the answer.

Beloved congregation, there is nothing wrong with the wisdom God gives. The problem lies in the human heart that receives and uses that wisdom. Solomon’s heart was at fault because he used God-given wisdom in the service of idolatry and sin. The beauty with which God created us in the beginning has been defiled by our sin, and even the pure wisdom God gives can lose its radiance because of our pride.

Therefore, lay down the heart that has blamed God. Pray that your unholy and impure self may be cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ. Ask God to restore the body, mind, and soul that he created so beautifully. As we are restored by God’s grace, we will become his children, more beautiful than the king of Tyre or Solomon. We will also live as true disciples of Jesus Christ, giving all glory to God. Hallelujah!

• What gift, achievement, or part of my life am I most tempted to take pride in?
• Am I finding my identity in Christ or in my appearance, career, relationships, possessions, or accomplishments?
• Am I using what God has given me to serve others and glorify him, or to prove my worth?
• Is there any pride, comparison, dishonesty, or desire for recognition that I need to confess today?
• What is one practical way I can use my abilities or resources to serve someone today?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for every good gift You have given me.

Forgive me for taking pride in my abilities, appearance, achievements, or possessions.

Cleanse me through the blood of Jesus Christ, and restore my body, mind, and soul.

Purify my motives and teach me to use my wisdom, opportunities, and resources to serve others and glorify You.

Keep my heart humble, and help me find my true identity in Christ rather than in worldly success or recognition.

May my life point others to Jesus and return all glory to You.

📖 (Ezekiel 28:1-19, ESV).

1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, say to the prince of Tyre, Thus says the Lord GOD:

“Because your heart is proud,
and you have said, ‘I am a god,
I sit in the seat of the gods,
in the heart of the seas,’
yet you are but a man, and no god,
though you make your heart like the heart of a god—
3  you are indeed wiser than Daniel;
no secret is hidden from you;
4  by your wisdom and your understanding
you have made wealth for yourself,
and have gathered gold and silver
into your treasuries;
5  by your great wisdom in your trade
you have increased your wealth,
and your heart has become proud in your wealth—
6  therefore thus says the Lord GOD:
Because you make your heart
like the heart of a god,
7  therefore, behold, I will bring foreigners upon you,
the most ruthless of the nations;
and they shall draw their swords against the beauty of your wisdom
and defile your splendor.
8  They shall thrust you down into the pit,
and you shall die the death of the slain
in the heart of the seas.
9  Will you still say, ‘I am a god,’
in the presence of those who kill you,
though you are but a man, and no god,
in the hands of those who slay you?
10  You shall die the death of the uncircumcised
by the hand of foreigners;
for I have spoken, declares the Lord GOD.”

11 Moreover, the word of the LORD came to me: 12 “Son of man, raise a lamentation over the king of Tyre, and say to him, Thus says the Lord GOD:

“You were the signet of perfection,
full of wisdom and perfect in beauty.
13  You were in Eden, the garden of God;
every precious stone was your covering,
sardius, topaz, and diamond,
beryl, onyx, and jasper,
sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle;
and crafted in gold were your settings
and your engravings.
On the day that you were created
they were prepared.
14  You were an anointed guardian cherub.
I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God;
in the midst of the stones of fire you walked.
15  You were blameless in your ways
from the day you were created,
till unrighteousness was found in you.
16  In the abundance of your trade
you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned;
so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God,
and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub,
from the midst of the stones of fire.
17  Your heart was proud because of your beauty;
you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor.
I cast you to the ground;
I exposed you before kings,
to feast their eyes on you.
18  By the multitude of your iniquities,
in the unrighteousness of your trade
you profaned your sanctuaries;
so I brought fire out from your midst;
it consumed you,
and I turned you to ashes on the earth
in the sight of all who saw you.
19  All who know you among the peoples
are appalled at you;
you have come to a dreadful end
and shall be no more forever.”
