✨ Don’t Let God’s Grace Become Ordinary | Psalm 114 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you see His daily grace with fresh eyes, so that His miracles do not become ordinary to your heart.

2. πŸ“… July 10, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

God’s presence is never ordinary, and His daily grace should lead us to renewed awe, remembrance, and obedience.

3. ✝️ Psalm 114:1-8

When Israel came out of Egypt, God made Judah his sanctuary and Israel his dominion. At his presence, the sea fled, the Jordan turned back, and mountains and hills skipped. The God of Jacob makes the earth tremble and turns rock and flint into flowing water.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob (v. 7).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

If we were to experience an astonishing miracle that we had never expected and could not possibly understand, how would we respond? As the younger generation might say today, wouldn’t we be “left speechless”? That is right. When people encounter something overwhelmingly amazing, they often experience a momentary paralysis of rational judgment or feel as though their thoughts have stopped.

Neuroscience can also help explain this response. When a person encounters something awe-inspiring or shocking, the amygdala, which detects threat and shock in the brain, responds immediately. At the same time, the function of the prefrontal cortex, which calmly interprets, organizes, and evaluates the situation, may temporarily weaken. That is why, before something overwhelmingly astonishing, we may become speechless and feel as though our thinking has briefly come to a halt.

Yet science shows us another remarkable truth. Even something deeply awe-inspiring and astonishing can begin to lose its initial impact when it is repeated again and again. At first, people may be struck speechless by a miracle and feel as though their thoughts have stopped. But when the same stimulus is repeated, they gradually become accustomed to it. This can be called “habituation.” In other words, our response can become dull even before something that once seemed overwhelmingly wonderful.

The people of Israel experienced events through the Exodus that were too amazing to fully describe. Even though they remained in the wilderness for forty years as a consequence of their disobedience, God continued to care for His people completely during that time. He guided them with the pillar of cloud and the pillar of fire, turned bitter water into sweet water, and fed them with manna from heaven. He also sent quail to give them meat, brought water from the rock, kept their clothes from wearing out and their feet from swelling, and gave them victory in battle.

In this way, Israel enjoyed the abundant grace of God. Yet sadly, throughout the forty years in the wilderness, they continually disobeyed and rebelled against Him. Perhaps they had become so accustomed to God’s daily miracles that their hearts grew dull before His grace. They could no longer see miracles as miracles, nor recognize grace as grace.

Beloved brothers and sisters, do you believe that opening your eyes this morning and breathing today are not ordinary things, but astonishing miracles of God that we cannot fully understand? Could it be that we have begun to take each morning for granted, living as though waking up and breathing are merely routine, while forgetting the God who gives us this amazing grace?

Therefore, from today onward, meditate on the Word day and night through QT. QT is a precious tool that helps us remember the abundant grace of God. It enables us to reflect daily on the incomprehensibly wonderful miracles God gives. It also helps us see God’s Word not as a mere habit, but as fresh grace given to us each day. In this way, QT becomes a precious channel of grace through which God’s people remember Him, come to know Him more deeply, and respond to Him anew each day.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Have I become too familiar with God’s grace?
  • What daily blessings have I started treating as “normal” instead of miracles?
  • Where do I need to recover awe before God?
  • Am I receiving God’s provision while forgetting God Himself?
  • How can QT help me remember who God is and respond in obedience today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for Your daily grace.

Forgive me for the times I have treated Your mercy as ordinary.

Open my eyes to see that every breath, every morning, and every moment in Your Word is a gift from You.

Teach me through QT to remember who You are, meditate on what You have done, and respond with fresh faith and obedience.

May my heart tremble again before Your holy and gracious presence.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (Psalm 114:1-8, ESV).

1 When Israel went out from Egypt,
the house of Jacob from a people of strange language,
2  Judah became his sanctuary,
Israel his dominion.

3  The sea looked and fled;
Jordan turned back.
4  The mountains skipped like rams,
the hills like lambs.

5  What ails you, O sea, that you flee?
O Jordan, that you turn back?
6  O mountains, that you skip like rams?
O hills, like lambs?

7  Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord,
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8  who turns the rock into a pool of water,
the flint into a spring of water.
