7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to show you how to serve with humility and joy, without seeking status, recognition, or special treatment.
2. π October 13, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God gives us different roles, but no one’s age, experience, or status should become a source of privilege. We are called to serve together with humility, fairness, and joy.
3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 24:1-31
David organized Aaron’s descendants into twenty-four divisions: sixteen from Eleazar and eight from Ithamar. Since both lines included officers of the sanctuary and of God, their service was assigned impartially by lot. They served in the house of the LORD according to God’s command through Aaron. The other Levites were also listed by family and cast lots without regard to age or rank.
4. π Key Verse
They divided them by lot, all alike, for there were sacred officers and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar (v. 5).
5. π Reflection
One issue drawing attention in the Korean church today is the changing role of church kitchens and fellowship meals. Sharing meals and fellowship has been a treasured tradition since the early church. Today, however, many churches find it increasingly difficult to continue operating their kitchens. Reports point to several contributing factors, including the demanding nature of kitchen service, a decline in volunteers, the aging of longtime workers, the increase in dual-income households, and growing financial burdens. In response, some churches have stopped operating their kitchens and begun using nearby restaurants, while others are hiring staff, providing simple meals, or finding new ways to continue table fellowship.
Today’s QT passage repeatedly tells us that the priests and Levites cast lots to determine their order of service (24:5, 31). Both the descendants of Eleazar and Ithamar, as well as the heads of the families and their younger brothers, participated in the same way. The same principle appears in chapter 25, where “the small and the great, the teacher as well as the pupil” were treated alike (25:8), and in chapter 26, where “small and great alike” cast lots (26:13). Their duties and responsibilities differed, but age, rank, and experience did not give anyone the privilege of securing a preferred place of service. Why, then, does Scripture repeatedly emphasize this principle?
David organized the priests and Levites so that they could carry out “all the work for the service of the house of God” in an orderly manner (23:28). When the order of service was determined, however, everyone cast lots in the same way so that age, experience, and family rank would not become sources of privilege. The offices of the priests and Levites were rooted in the commands God had given through Moses, and David organized them for the age of the temple. Chronicles testifies that the overall plan for the temple and its service was given to David through the guidance of the Spirit and the hand of the LORD (28:12–13, 19). This organization, therefore, was not David’s arbitrary decision but the result of his obedience in faithfully applying God’s commands to the temple era.
Dear brothers and sisters, God desires us to fulfill the gifts and responsibilities entrusted to us with joy rather than reluctance. Within the church, wealth, education, and social status must never become privileges or barriers to opportunities for service. Every believer should serve others according to the gifts and calling received from God, while also respecting the biblical qualifications for each responsibility and the needs of the community. When these principles are firmly established, the church can wisely decide whether to maintain its kitchen or pursue another form of table fellowship, seeking the Spirit’s guidance rather than making decisions based only on tradition or convenience.
Therefore, let us examine whether our church traditions are still fulfilling their original purpose of helping us worship God and build up His people in love. At the same time, let us consider whether we have neglected the essential things the church must preserve, such as the Word, worship, Christian fellowship, and love, in the name of innovation and change. Chronicles shows us how seriously David valued preparing for the house and worship of God. As those being built together as God’s house in Christ, we must earnestly seek the Spirit’s wisdom to discern which traditions to preserve and which practices to change so that we may remain more faithful to the gospel.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Do I see serving as a privilege, a burden, or a way to gain recognition?
- Is there a necessary but unnoticed task that I have been avoiding?
- Am I expecting a small group of people to carry most of the church’s work?
- Is there a church tradition that needs to be evaluated according to its biblical purpose?
- What gift or opportunity has God given me to serve others this week?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving each believer a place to serve in Your church.
Forgive me for seeking recognition, avoiding inconvenient work, or comparing my role with the roles of others.
Help me use the gifts and opportunities You have given me with humility, faithfulness, and joy.
Give our church wisdom to preserve what is essential, change what no longer serves its biblical purpose, and share responsibilities without favoritism.
May everything we do remain faithful to the gospel and build up Your people in love.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (1 Chronicles 24:1-31, ESV).
1 The divisions of the sons of Aaron were these. The sons of Aaron: Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 2 But Nadab and Abihu died before their father and had no children, so Eleazar and Ithamar became the priests. 3 With the help of Zadok of the sons of Eleazar, and Ahimelech of the sons of Ithamar, David organized them according to the appointed duties in their service. 4 Since more chief men were found among the sons of Eleazar than among the sons of Ithamar, they organized them under sixteen heads of fathers’ houses of the sons of Eleazar, and eight of the sons of Ithamar. 5 They divided them by lot, all alike, for there were sacred officers and officers of God among both the sons of Eleazar and the sons of Ithamar. 6 And the scribe Shemaiah, the son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded them in the presence of the king and the princes and Zadok the priest and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar and the heads of the fathers’ houses of the priests and of the Levites, one father’s house being chosen for Eleazar and one chosen for Ithamar.
7 The first lot fell to Jehoiarib, the second to Jedaiah, 8 the third to Harim, the fourth to Seorim, 9 the fifth to Malchijah, the sixth to Mijamin, 10 the seventh to Hakkoz, the eighth to Abijah, 11 the ninth to Jeshua, the tenth to Shecaniah, 12 the eleventh to Eliashib, the twelfth to Jakim, 13 the thirteenth to Huppah, the fourteenth to Jeshebeab, 14 the fifteenth to Bilgah, the sixteenth to Immer, 15 the seventeenth to Hezir, the eighteenth to Happizzez, 16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah, the twentieth to Jehezkel, 17 the twenty-first to Jachin, the twenty-second to Gamul, 18 the twenty-third to Delaiah, the twenty-fourth to Maaziah. 19 These had as their appointed duty in their service to come into the house of the LORD according to the procedure established for them by Aaron their father, as the LORD God of Israel had commanded him.
20 And of the rest of the sons of Levi: of the sons of Amram, Shubael; of the sons of Shubael, Jehdeiah. 21 Of Rehabiah: of the sons of Rehabiah, Isshiah the chief. 22 Of the Izharites, Shelomoth; of the sons of Shelomoth, Jahath. 23 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the chief, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, Jekameam the fourth. 24 The sons of Uzziel, Micah; of the sons of Micah, Shamir. 25 The brother of Micah, Isshiah; of the sons of Isshiah, Zechariah. 26 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Jaaziah: Beno. 27 The sons of Merari: of Jaaziah, Beno, Shoham, Zaccur, and Ibri. 28 Of Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons. 29 Of Kish, the sons of Kish: Jerahmeel. 30 The sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth. These were the sons of the Levites according to their fathers’ houses. 31 These also, the head of each father’s house and his younger brother alike, cast lots, just as their brothers the sons of Aaron, in the presence of King David, Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of fathers’ houses of the priests and of the Levites.
