2026-10-08 | πŸ”’ Stop Trusting the Numbers: Choose God Over Pride | 1 Chronicles 21 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to reveal where you may be trusting your achievements, influence, or visible results more than him. Ask him to give you the humility to receive correction and depend on his grace.

2. πŸ“… October 8, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Spiritual pride begins when we forget God’s grace and place our confidence in what we can measure, control, or accomplish.

3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 21:1–8

Satan incited David to count Israel. Although Joab warned that this would bring guilt upon the nation, David insisted. God was displeased and struck Israel. David then confessed that he had sinned greatly and acted foolishly, pleading with God to take away his guilt.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel (v. 7).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

When I left both my job and business to enter full-time ministry, one of my former senior colleagues gave me this advice:
“I do not know much about the circumstances pastors face or how churches operate, but I have sadly seen similar problems repeated. Since I care about you, let me offer you some advice. Like the president of a company, a pastor must be more humble than anyone else. Listen carefully to the Word of God whom you serve, and always remain open to the counsel of fellow pastors and church members. Humility and pride may be separated by only a very thin line. By the time you realize that you have become proud, it may already be too late.”

The census in today’s passage appears to have taken place after the Bathsheba incident, during the latter part of David’s reign. In the Bathsheba incident, David surrendered to his desires. Now, he gave in to the temptation to measure the size of his kingdom and the strength of his military. The form of his sin was different, but the same spiritual pride was at work: he trusted his own judgment and visible power rather than God.

Some readers may minimize David’s responsibility because verse 1 says that Satan incited him. However, Satan’s temptation did not remove David’s responsibility. Joab clearly warned him that the census could bring guilt upon Israel. The passage does not explain why David rejected Joab’s warning. Nevertheless, David pushed aside a warning he did not want to hear and used his royal authority to enforce his command.

David was the one who made the final decision and insisted that the command be carried out. God regarded his action as evil, and David himself confessed that he had sinned greatly. His sin did not remain a personal failure. The king’s pride and misguided decision brought devastating consequences upon all Israel.

Dear brothers and sisters, David’s spiritual pride is not merely a past event recorded in Scripture. It remains a serious spiritual danger that can confront any of us at any time. The moment we forget the grace by which God has given us victory and saved us, we begin to trust our experience, achievements, and visible numbers more than God’s power.

Therefore, we must stand before God’s Word every day. Quiet Time is not merely a time to gain biblical knowledge. It is a time to remember who God is and what He has done for us. May you lay down your pride through His Word today, listen humbly to wise counsel, and once again depend on and worship the living God.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • What achievement, number, or visible result am I tempted to trust more than God?
  • Is there wise counsel I have been ignoring because it challenges my plans or exposes my pride?
  • Have I confused my achievements with God’s grace?
  • When someone corrects me, do I listen humbly or immediately become defensive?
  • What is one practical way I can depend on God rather than visible results this week?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for every victory, opportunity, and good gift You have given me.

Forgive me for forgetting Your grace and trusting my achievements, experience, influence, or visible results more than You.

Give me the humility to listen to Your Word and receive wise correction from others.

Help me recognize spiritual pride before it controls my decisions and harms the people around me.

May I place my confidence not in what I can count, control, or accomplish, but in You alone.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Chronicles 21:1-8, ESV).

1 Then Satan stood against Israel and incited David to number Israel. 2 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the army, “Go, number Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, and bring me a report, that I may know their number.” 3 But Joab said, “May the LORD add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord’s servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should it be a cause of guilt for Israel?” 4 But the king’s word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel and came back to Jerusalem. 5 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were 1,100,000 men who drew the sword, and in Judah 470,000 who drew the sword. 6 But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king’s command was abhorrent to Joab.
7 But God was displeased with this thing, and he struck Israel. 8 And David said to God, “I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, please take away the iniquity of your servant, for I have acted very foolishly.”
