7-Step QT Notes

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

2. πŸ“… October 7, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

The victory God begins through one faithful person can spread courage throughout an entire community.

3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 20:1–8

Joab conquered the Ammonites and captured Rabbah, while David took its king’s crown and great spoil and subjected its people to forced labor. In later battles, Sibbecai, Elhanan, and Jonathan defeated the descendants of the giants. Even these mighty enemies fell by the hands of David and his servants.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

These were descended from the giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants (v. 8).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

The recent release of the animated film David has once again drawn public attention to the story of David. The battle between David and Goliath, familiar even to those who know little about the Bible, leaves a powerful impression through its striking contrast. Of course, the Bible’s emphasis is not simply that the weak defeated the strong. It declares that the battle and salvation belong to the Lord.

From the beginning, the story of David and Goliath appears to be an impossible battle. On one side stood a giant whose size and armor far exceeded those of an ordinary man. On the other stood a young man with no experience in warfare. One was a seasoned warrior armed from head to toe, while the other was a young shepherd who had come to the battlefield on an errand for his father. Because of this dramatic contrast, the story of David and Goliath continues to speak powerfully even to modern people who may not fully understand its theological significance.

Today’s passage recalls David’s first public victory over Goliath and brings to a close the account of David’s wars that began in 1 Chronicles 18. David once approached Goliath alone while the armies of Israel and Philistia watched. Now, however, David’s warriors confront the giants themselves and defeat them. At first, all Israel trembled before one Goliath, but now David’s warriors strike down the giants one after another. The victory that once began with David alone has now expanded into the victory of the entire community that stands with him.

Beloved congregation, taking on something new is frightening and difficult for everyone. We become even more hesitant when we have experienced failure in the past. But the God of David is also our God. Just as God granted David victory, he will also grant us victory according to his will. Therefore, let us not retreat in fear but step forward in faith. Just as David’s victory became the victory of his warriors, let us rise together in dependence on God. Let us strengthen one another’s faith and faithfully carry out to the end the battles God has entrusted to us.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • What “giant” am I currently afraid to face?
  • Is a past failure keeping me from taking a faithful step forward?
  • What specific act of obedience is God calling me to take today?
  • Whose courageous faith has helped me trust God more deeply?
  • Who needs my encouragement, prayer, or practical support as they face their own challenge?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for being with us when our challenges feel overwhelming.

Forgive me for allowing fear and past failure to control my decisions.

Help me trust You more than I trust my fears and obey You even when the outcome is uncertain.

Give me the courage to face what You have placed before me, and use my faith to strengthen others.

Help us rise together as a community that prays for one another, encourages one another, and depends on You.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Chronicles 20:1-8, ESV).

1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go out to battle, Joab led out the army and ravaged the country of the Ammonites and came and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. And Joab struck down Rabbah and overthrew it. 2 And David took the crown of their king from his head. He found that it weighed a talent of gold, and in it was a precious stone. And it was placed on David’s head. And he brought out the spoil of the city, a very great amount. 3 And he brought out the people who were in it and set them to labor with saws and iron picks and axes. And thus David did to all the cities of the Ammonites. Then David and all the people returned to Jerusalem.

4 And after this there arose war with the Philistines at Gezer. Then Sibbecai the Hushathite struck down Sippai, who was one of the descendants of the giants, and the Philistines were subdued. 5 And there was again war with the Philistines, and Elhanan the son of Jair struck down Lahmi the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam. 6 And there was again war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number, and he also was descended from the giants. 7 And when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, struck him down. 8 These were descended from the giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
