2026-09-29 | 🎯 Stop Just Attending Church: Discover Its True Purpose | 1 Chronicles 16 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you understand that the church does not exist primarily for our comfort or preferences, but to worship him and proclaim his salvation to the world.

2. πŸ“… September 29, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

The church is called to worship God wholeheartedly and proclaim his salvation day after day.

3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 16:23-36

David calls all the earth and every nation to sing to the LORD, proclaim his salvation daily, and declare his glory. The LORD alone made the heavens and reigns over all creation. Because he is good and his steadfast love endures forever, his people pray for deliverance and gathering. All creation rejoices before his coming judgment, and the people respond, “Amen,” and praise the LORD.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

Sing to the LORD, all the earth! Tell of his salvation from day to day (v. 23).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

What is the purpose of the church? Although this question may appear simple, it is not easily answered when we consider the many debates throughout church history concerning the church’s nature and mission. Today, churches seek to fulfill their calling through various forms, including churches without buildings, cell churches, house churches, and churches that use online platforms. In my own pastoral ministry, I also prayerfully consider what the most biblical purpose of the church is and how we can faithfully obey the teachings of Scripture.

Today’s Quiet Time passage continues David’s song of thanksgiving from yesterday. After bringing the ark of the LORD to Jerusalem, David worships before God and sings a song of gratitude. Yet his thanksgiving is not limited to becoming king or successfully bringing the ark to Jerusalem. He proclaims that God is worthy to receive thanksgiving and praise not only from David and Israel but also from every nation and all creation. When we read this song alongside the teaching of the New Testament, we see that the Christian community is called to worship God and proclaim his salvation to the world.

Dear brothers and sisters, the essence of the church is not found in a building or an institution. The church is the people of God, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, and his body, with Christ as its head. The church is also a community called by the gospel and united by the Holy Spirit to love God, love one another, and proclaim God’s salvation to the world.

Therefore, if the church neither worships God nor proclaims the saving gospel of Jesus Christ to the world, it will inevitably lose sight of its identity and mission. May we become believers and a church that worship God wholeheartedly and proclaim his salvation to the world day after day.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Has my view of church become centered more on what I receive than on how I can worship and serve?
  • Are my worship and obedience shaped by who God is, or by my feelings and preferences?
  • Who needs to hear about God’s saving grace and faithfulness from me today?
  • What is one practical way I can help my church fulfill its mission this week?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, You alone are the Creator and King who deserves the praise of all creation.

Forgive me for treating the church as a place that exists primarily to meet my needs and preferences.

Help me worship You wholeheartedly, love Your people faithfully, and grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Give me courage and wisdom to proclaim Your salvation through both my words and my actions.

May my life and our church declare to the world that You reign and that Your steadfast love endures forever.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Chronicles 16:23-36, ESV).

23  Sing to the LORD, all the earth!
Tell of his salvation from day to day.
24  Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous works among all the peoples!
25  For great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised,
and he is to be feared above all gods.
26  For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols,
but the LORD made the heavens.
27  Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his place.

28  Ascribe to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength!
29  Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him!
Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
30  tremble before him, all the earth;
yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved.
31  Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice,
and let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”
32  Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it!
33  Then shall the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the LORD, for he comes to judge the earth.
34  Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

35 Say also:
“Save us, O God of our salvation,
and gather and deliver us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
and glory in your praise.
36  Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
from everlasting to everlasting!”

Then all the people said, “Amen!” and praised the LORD.
