7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you seek his will through Scripture, prayer, and obedience.
2. π September 24, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God does not always reveal the entire path ahead. He calls us to seek him, obey his Word, and take the next faithful step, trusting that he goes before us.
3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 14:1-17
Hiram helped build David’s palace. David knew that the LORD had established and exalted his kingdom for Israel’s sake. When the Philistines attacked twice, David inquired of God each time and obeyed his different commands. God went before him, gave him victory, and caused all nations to fear him as his fame spread.
4. π Key Verse
And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel (v. 2).
5. π Reflection
After serving in youth ministry for many years, I have received countless questions from young people. One of the questions they ask most often is probably, “What is God’s will for my life?” They wonder how they can know whether the future they dream about or the career path they are considering truly pleases God. Behind this question is a precious desire to live according to God’s will.
Today’s QT passage presents one of the Bible’s answers to this question. Hiram, king of Tyre, sent messengers to David, along with workers and materials needed to build his palace. Through this event, David recognized that the LORD had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people.
When the Philistines attacked, David first inquired of God before going into battle. When they attacked again, David once more sought God’s direction. This time, he was to go into battle when he heard the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees. That sound indicated that the LORD had gone ahead of David to strike the Philistine army. When David obeyed God’s command, God gave him victory and caused all the nations to fear him. In this way, David discerned God’s will and acted according to God’s command.
David sometimes received a direct answer after inquiring of God, but he also recognized God’s work through the events taking place around him. His example offers an important lesson for our own journey of faith. God teaches us his will through Scripture and guides us as we pray. He may also direct our path providentially by sending people into our lives or changing our circumstances.
However, we should not automatically interpret our circumstances as God’s direct word to us. We must use God’s revealed will in Scripture as our standard and prayerfully discern the events taking place around us. God fulfills his will in his own time and in his own way, not necessarily in the way we expect or desire.
Dear brothers and sisters, do you want to know God’s will? Jesus said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it” (Luke 11:28, ESV). Therefore, let us first listen to and obey the will of God that has already been revealed in Scripture. Let us seek God’s kingdom and righteousness through prayer and carefully consider the events around us within God’s providential care.
God does not usually show us the entire path into the future all at once. Instead, he calls us to obey the Word he has given us today and take the next step in faith. Therefore, let us not assume that we must know everything in advance before we can move forward. Let us obey what God has shown us today and faithfully take the next step, trusting him to guide us.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Is there an important decision about my career, education, relationships, ministry, or future that I need to bring before God?
- Am I truly seeking God’s will, or am I mainly asking God to approve what I have already decided?
- What has God already made clear in Scripture that I need to obey today?
- Am I relying on a past experience instead of seeking God in my present situation?
- Am I treating an open door, a closed door, or a strong feeling as a definite message from God without examining it through Scripture?
- What is one faithful next step that I can take today?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, I want to live according to Your will.
Forgive me for wanting to know the entire plan before I obey You.
Teach me through Your Word, shape my desires through prayer, and give me wisdom through godly counsel.
Help me seek Your kingdom and righteousness before my own comfort and success.
Help me trust that You are always with me and that You go before me.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (1 Chronicles 14:1-17, ESV).
1 And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, also masons and carpenters to build a house for him. 2 And David knew that the LORD had established him as king over Israel, and that his kingdom was highly exalted for the sake of his people Israel.
3 And David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David fathered more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.
8 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over all Israel, all the Philistines went up to search for David. But David heard of it and went out against them. 9 Now the Philistines had come and made a raid in the Valley of Rephaim. 10 And David inquired of God, “Shall I go up against the Philistines? Will you give them into my hand?” And the LORD said to him, “Go up, and I will give them into your hand.” 11 And he went up to Baal-perazim, and David struck them down there. And David said, “God has broken through my enemies by my hand, like a bursting flood.” Therefore the name of that place is called Baal-perazim. 12 And they left their gods there, and David gave command, and they were burned.
13 And the Philistines yet again made a raid in the valley. 14 And when David again inquired of God, God said to him, “You shall not go up after them; go around and come against them opposite the balsam trees. 15 And when you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, then go out to battle, for God has gone out before you to strike down the army of the Philistines.” 16 And David did as God commanded him, and they struck down the Philistine army from Gibeon to Gezer. 17 And the fame of David went out into all lands, and the LORD brought the fear of him upon all nations.
