2026-09-22 | π Stop Waiting for a Sign: God’s Will Is Already Clear | 1 Chronicles 13 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you understand his revealed will through Scripture and give you the courage to obey what he has already made clear.
2. π September 22, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Following God does not mean waiting for a special answer before every decision. It means knowing and obeying what God has already revealed in his Word.
3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 13:1-8
After consulting Israel’s leaders, David proposed gathering the priests, Levites, and all Israel to bring back the ark of God, which had been neglected in Saul’s days. The people agreed, so David assembled Israel and brought the ark from Kiriath-jearim on a new cart driven by Uzzah and Ahio. David and all Israel celebrated before God with all their might, singing and playing many instruments.
4. π Key Verse
“Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul” (v. 3)
5. π Reflection
No one asks God for permission to open their eyes before waking up in the morning. Neither does anyone ask God for permission before breathing in the oxygen needed to live. In the same way, many things closely connected to our lives are done naturally without asking God about each one. Doing so does not necessarily create a spiritual problem. Why, then, do we think that Christians must ask God and receive an individual answer before beginning anything?
In fact, the Bible gives no universal and direct command of this kind. Such a command is also difficult to find among the many words of Jesus recorded in the four Gospels. Jesus commanded His disciples to follow and do God’s will, but He did not command them to ask God for a special answer before beginning every action.
Therefore, David’s appeal to the people in today’s QT passage should not primarily be understood as an attempt to emphasize Saul’s failure to inquire of God. Rather, as we considered yesterday, its focus is on all the people becoming united in obedience to God’s Word. When we read tomorrow’s passage about the LORD’s judgment falling upon Uzzah while the ark was being transported, we may easily conclude that this happened simply because David had failed to ask God beforehand. However, the central point of tomorrow’s passage is not that David failed to ask a question. It is that he failed to examine and follow the instructions God had already given concerning how the ark was to be carried.
Dear brothers and sisters, we should not say that Saul perished simply because he failed to inquire of God before the ark, or that David became king because he did inquire of God. What matters is not merely the act of asking God a question. What matters is trusting and obeying the Word that God has already revealed.
Likewise, Jesus’ teaching does not focus on repeatedly asking God for new revelation. It focuses on knowing and practicing the will that God has already made known. Therefore, we must not become people who merely keep “asking about” the Father’s revealed will. We must become people who actually “do” His will (see Matt. 7:21). May you read God’s Word today and live according to the will you discover through it.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Am I waiting for a special sign about something God has already addressed in his Word?
- Have I ever used “I’m still praying about it” as an excuse to delay a clear act of obedience?
- When I pray about a decision, am I truly seeking God’s will, or am I waiting for him to approve what I already want?
- What command or truth from Scripture do I already know but still need to obey?
- What is one specific way I can put God’s revealed will into practice today?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for revealing Your will through Your Word.
Forgive me for waiting for a special sign while neglecting what You have already made clear.
Give me wisdom when the right path is unclear, and keep me from using uncertainty as an excuse to delay obedience.
Help me trust Your Word, listen to Your Spirit, receive godly counsel, and courageously practice what You have taught me.
May my life be shaped not merely by asking about Your will, but by faithfully doing it.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (1 Chronicles 13:1-8, ESV).
1 David consulted with the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, with every leader. 2 And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the LORD our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us. 3 Then let us bring again the ark of our God to us, for we did not seek it in the days of Saul.” 4 All the assembly agreed to do so, for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.
5 So David assembled all Israel from the Nile of Egypt to Lebo-hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim. 6 And David and all Israel went up to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim that belongs to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD who sits enthroned above the cherubim. 7 And they carried the ark of God on a new cart, from the house of Abinadab, and Uzzah and Ahio were driving the cart. 8 And David and all Israel were celebrating before God with all their might, with song and lyres and harps and tambourines and cymbals and trumpets.
