7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to teach you how to pursue unity by obeying his Word and loving others as Christ has loved you.

2. πŸ“… September 21, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

True unity does not come from having the same personality, preferences, or opinions. It comes when God’s people place his Word above their personal interests and obey him with one heart.

3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 12:23-40

According to the word of the LORD, armed troops from every tribe gathered at Hebron to transfer Saul’s kingdom to David. With whole hearts and a single purpose, all Israel united to make David king. For three days they ate and drank together, while relatives from near and far brought abundant provisions, and joy filled Israel.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

All these, men of war, arrayed in battle order, came to Hebron with a whole heart to make David king over all Israel. Likewise, all the rest of Israel were of a single mind to make David king (v. 38).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

If we gathered the many problems facing the modern church and examined what lies at their center, “division” would likely be one of the first words that comes to mind. The church should be the first place where God’s command to love one another becomes a reality. Yet when believers clash over opinions, criticize one another, and insist that only they are right, what else can we call it but division?

When churches break apart and believers divide into opposing sides, hurting one another, the church, the community of Jesus Christ, gives outsiders the tragic impression that it is no different from any other organization in the world. Christians are called to testify that God is alive. Yet when they fight more bitterly, take one another to court, and harbor hatred, they reveal one of the darkest aspects of the modern church.

Today’s QT passage, however, tells us a remarkable story that stands in sharp contrast to this reality. First Chronicles 11:3 declares that David made a covenant with all the elders of Israel before the LORD at Hebron and became king over Israel. Today’s passage then records the armed warriors who gathered at Hebron to make David king.

These people came to transfer Saul’s kingdom to David according to the word of the LORD. Regardless of their tribes or backgrounds, they devoted themselves wholeheartedly to helping David. Even those who had remained loyal to Saul’s household joined together in making David king.

How could all Israel become united in making David king? It was because they recognized together that making David king was being done “according to the word of the LORD,” as stated in 1 Chronicles 12:23. They became one because they sought to obey what God had spoken rather than placing their own opinions and interests first.

Dear brothers and sisters, one of the most fundamental causes of division in the modern church may be our failure to obey God’s Word wholeheartedly. Jesus commanded us to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and to love our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37–40; Mark 12:29–31; Deuteronomy 6:5; Leviticus 19:18). If we sincerely obey these words, could division not cease and broken relationships be restored?

If you desire the church to which you belong to overcome division and become united, do not wait for someone else to change first. We must begin by personally obeying God’s Word, loving God, and loving our neighbors. May God use your obedience to bring unity to the church and fill your community with the joy that comes from him.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Is there someone in my church, workplace, school, or community whom I have criticized, avoided, or refused to forgive?
  • Am I placing my personal preferences above God’s command to love?
  • Do I care more about proving that I am right or reflecting the character of Jesus?
  • What is one specific act of obedience I can take today to bring healing and unity?
  • How might my obedience help someone experience the love of Christ?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for calling Your people to live in unity.

Forgive me for the times when I have placed my opinions, preferences, and pride above Your Word.

Reveal any bitterness, selfishness, or desire to be right that is creating division in my relationships.

Teach me to love You with all my heart and to love my neighbors as myself.

Give me the humility to listen, apologize, forgive, and take the first step toward peace.

May my obedience help bring healing to broken relationships, unity to Your church, and the joy of Christ to my community.

Amen.
