2026-09-16 | ⚖️ Why Did God Judge Saul? | 1 Chronicles 9-10 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. 🙏 Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to show you where you have been seeking guidance, security, or control apart from him.

2. 📅 September 16, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Human unfaithfulness has serious consequences, but it can never overturn God’s covenant faithfulness.

3. ✝️ 1 Chronicles 9:35-10:14

The genealogy traces Saul’s family from Jeiel of Gibeon to Azel’s six sons. Israel fled from the Philistines, and Saul and his three sons died on Mount Gilboa. The Philistines displayed Saul’s head and armor in their temples, but the valiant men of Jabesh-gilead recovered and buried them and fasted seven days. Saul died for breaking faith with the LORD, who transferred the kingdom to David.

4. 📖 Key Verse

So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. He did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse (vv. 13-14).

5. 📝 Reflection

Today’s QT passage first presents Saul’s genealogy, then describes how he died, and finally offers a theological explanation of why he died. Although Saul was the king of Israel, God’s covenant people, he did not obey the word of the LORD. He also sought guidance from a medium, whom God had forbidden, and failed to seek the LORD sincerely. The Chronicler makes it clear that Saul’s death was not merely the result of misfortune in battle or his own act of suicide. It was God’s judgment upon his unfaithfulness.

However, we must not generalize this passage to mean, “God kills His children whenever they sin.” Saul was not merely a private individual. He was the king who represented God’s people. He repeatedly rejected God’s word and, rather than repenting and returning to God, sought help elsewhere. Therefore, his death does not mean that every believer who commits a sin will be judged by physical death. It was a historical and royal judgment demonstrating the seriousness of persistently rejecting God in covenant unfaithfulness.

Dear brothers and sisters, God loves His covenant people. He is good, slow to anger, and patient with us. Yet God’s patience does not mean that He will tolerate sin and unfaithfulness forever. The moral responsibility for the sin that led to Saul’s death rested with Saul himself, who had been unfaithful to the LORD. God judged him justly, brought his reign to an end, and transferred the kingdom to David, the son of Jesse.

Therefore, as you meditate on today’s passage, remember that although Saul, a human king, failed because of his unfaithfulness, God’s covenant purpose, which had continued from Adam, did not fail. God continued to fulfill His covenant faithfulness by ending Saul’s unfaithful reign and transferring the kingdom to David. May you recognize that the responsibility for the sin that brought about Saul’s death rested not with God but with Saul himself, and that God judged him justly.

6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where do I usually turn first when I feel anxious or uncertain?
  • Am I sincerely seeking God’s will, or am I asking him to approve a decision I have already made?
  • Is there anything God has clearly shown me in Scripture that I continue to resist?
  • Have I mistaken God’s patience for permission to remain unchanged?
  • What is one fear, decision, or area of control that I need to surrender to God today?
  • What is one practical act of obedience I can take this week?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for remaining faithful even when human beings fail.

Forgive me for seeking guidance, security, and control apart from You.

Keep me from mistaking Your patience for permission to continue resisting Your Word.

Help me seek You sincerely, listen to Your Word, and obey You with a willing heart.

When my plans fail and circumstances change, remind me that Your covenant purpose never fails.

Help me surrender my fears and decisions to You today and trust Your faithful guidance.

Amen.

Scriptures

📖 (1 Chronicles 9:35-10:14, ESV).

35 In Gibeon lived the father of Gibeon, Jeiel, and the name of his wife was Maacah, 36 and his firstborn son Abdon, then Zur, Kish, Baal, Ner, Nadab, 37 Gedor, Ahio, Zechariah, and Mikloth; 38 and Mikloth was the father of Shimeam; and these also lived opposite their kinsmen in Jerusalem, with their kinsmen. 39 Ner fathered Kish, Kish fathered Saul, Saul fathered Jonathan, Malchi-shua, Abinadab, and Eshbaal. 40 And the son of Jonathan was Merib-baal, and Merib-baal fathered Micah. 41 The sons of Micah: Pithon, Melech, Tahrea, and Ahaz. 42 And Ahaz fathered Jarah, and Jarah fathered Alemeth, Azmaveth, and Zimri. And Zimri fathered Moza. 43 Moza fathered Binea, and Rephaiah was his son, Eleasah his son, Azel his son. 44 Azel had six sons and these are their names: Azrikam, Bocheru, Ishmael, Sheariah, Obadiah, and Hanan; these were the sons of Azel.

10:1 Now the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2 And the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3 The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers found him, and he was wounded by the archers. 4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. 5 And when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his sword and died. 6 Thus Saul died; he and his three sons and all his house died together. 7 And when all the men of Israel who were in the valley saw that the army had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned their cities and fled, and the Philistines came and lived in them.
8 The next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found Saul and his sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9 And they stripped him and took his head and his armor, and sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to carry the good news to their idols and to the people. 10 And they put his armor in the temple of their gods and fastened his head in the temple of Dagon. 11 But when all Jabesh-gilead heard all that the Philistines had done to Saul, 12 all the valiant men arose and took away the body of Saul and the bodies of his sons, and brought them to Jabesh. And they buried their bones under the oak in Jabesh and fasted seven days.
13 So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the LORD in that he did not keep the command of the LORD, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance. 14 He did not seek guidance from the LORD. Therefore the LORD put him to death and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse.
