7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to reveal any prejudice or favoritism in your heart and to help you see every believer as someone welcomed and valued by his grace.
2. π August 28, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God builds his community not on human privilege, but on his covenant, justice, and grace.
3. ✝️ Ezekiel 47:13-23
The Lord GOD defines the boundaries of the land and commands Israel to divide it equally among the twelve tribes as the inheritance he swore to give their fathers, with two portions for Joseph. Sojourners who reside and have children among them shall be treated as native-born Israelites and receive an inheritance in whatever tribe they reside.
4. π Key Verse
”In whatever tribe the sojourner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord GOD” (v. 23).
5. π Reflection
People today are highly sensitive to issues of fairness and equality. Regardless of whether they are progressive or conservative, people regard fairness and equality as important values. Therefore, when someone intentionally undermines a fair social order, people may become deeply outraged and publicly condemn that person even when they have not been personally harmed.
Why, then, are we so sensitive to fairness and equality? Behavioral economics and social psychology suggest that actual human behavior cannot be fully explained by the classical view that people seek only to maximize their own economic interests. According to relevant research, even when we are not directly harmed, we recognize that allowing violations of shared rules to go unchallenged may eventually harm the entire community to which we belong. In other words, we perceive unfairness and inequality as threats to the order of our community.
The Bible, however, presents a more fundamental standard than the human sense of fairness. In today’s QT passage from Ezekiel, God commands the Israelites to divide the land so that each tribe may receive the portion God has appointed, according to the promise he swore to their ancestors. The land is not a possession that Israel acquired through its own strength. It is an inheritance graciously given by God.
What is even more remarkable is that foreigners are not excluded from this inheritance. God commands the Israelites to regard the foreigners who have settled among them and raised children there as native-born Israelites. They are also to receive an inheritance within the tribe where they reside. God establishes the restored community not upon privileges based on ancestry or place of origin, but upon his covenant and justice.
Our church is a community of believers who have been saved through faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore, more than any other community, the church should be a place where God’s Word and biblical principles are faithfully upheld. But what does our reality look like? Do we value certain believers more highly because of the amount they give or their social status? Do we allow a person’s influence in the world to result in greater authority or leadership within the church?
Dear brothers and sisters, although we have received different gifts and responsibilities, we are all children of God who have been saved by the same grace in Christ. No one is more or less honorable because of race, education, wealth, or social status. Therefore, let us serve every member of the church with God’s love, free from prejudice and discrimination. When we do so, the holy name and glory of God will flow through the church into the world.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Do I treat certain people as more important because of their wealth, education, career, race, or influence?
- Who in my church, small group, workplace, or school might feel overlooked or excluded?
- Have I allowed personal preferences or social status to influence the way I treat others?
- What practical step can I take today to welcome and serve someone who may feel like an outsider?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your family through Jesus Christ.
Forgive me for judging people according to their wealth, education, race, career, or social status.
Help me see every believer as someone saved, welcomed, and valued by Your grace and reveal the prejudice and favoritism that may be hidden in my heart.
May our church reflect Your covenant, justice, and grace so that Your holy name and glory may be revealed to the world.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Ezekiel 47:13-23, ESV).
13 Thus says the Lord GOD: “This is the boundary by which you shall divide the land for inheritance among the twelve tribes of Israel. Joseph shall have two portions. 14 And you shall divide equally what I swore to give to your fathers. This land shall fall to you as your inheritance.
15 “This shall be the boundary of the land: On the north side, from the Great Sea by way of Hethlon to Lebo-hamath, and on to Zedad, 16 Berothah, Sibraim (which lies on the border between Damascus and Hamath), as far as Hazer-hatticon, which is on the border of Hauran. 17 So the boundary shall run from the sea to Hazar-enan, which is on the northern border of Damascus, with the border of Hamath to the north. This shall be the north side.
18 “On the east side, the boundary shall run between Hauran and Damascus; along the Jordan between Gilead and the land of Israel; to the eastern sea and as far as Tamar. This shall be the east side.
19 “On the south side, it shall run from Tamar as far as the waters of Meribah-kadesh, from there along the Brook of Egypt to the Great Sea. This shall be the south side.
20 “On the west side, the Great Sea shall be the boundary to a point opposite Lebo-hamath. This shall be the west side.
21 “So you shall divide this land among you according to the tribes of Israel. 22 You shall allot it as an inheritance for yourselves and for the sojourners who reside among you and have had children among you. They shall be to you as native-born children of Israel. With you they shall be allotted an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. 23 In whatever tribe the sojourner resides, there you shall assign him his inheritance, declares the Lord GOD.
