2026-08-10 | ⏳ Can’t Change the Past? Trust the God Who Rules the Future | Ezekiel 38 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you release your regrets about the past and your fears about the future, trusting that all time and history remain under his sovereign rule.
2. π August 10, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
We cannot change the past or control the future, but we can trust the God who rules over all time, including the plans of those who oppose him.
3. ✝️ Ezekiel 38:1-13
The LORD declares himself against Gog and will draw him out with a vast, armed alliance. In the latter years, Gog will descend like a storm upon Israel, a land restored from war and a people gathered from the nations who dwell securely. Devising an evil plan, he will seek to plunder their goods and livestock, while Sheba, Dedan, and Tarshish question his hunger for spoil.
4. π Key Verse
Thus says the Lord GOD: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme (v. 10)
5. π Reflection
Among Hollywood blockbusters, many science-fiction epics make time a central theme. Heroes who can travel into the past or foresee the future often play a decisive role in defeating villains. Even after losing a battle in the present, they may return to the past to reverse the course of events or change what previously happened. At other times, they foresee which possibility among countless futures will lead to victory and choose the present path that will bring about that future. In the end, their choice saves the world.
Why are people so fascinated by these movies and stories? Perhaps it is because we all know that, in reality, we cannot reverse the past or freely choose the future that lies ahead. We experience a sense of hope and satisfaction through stories that portray human beings as capable of doing what we can never do.
In today’s passage, God declares what will happen in the future. Yet his declaration includes more than what he himself will do. God also knows the thoughts and evil plans of the nations, and he rules even those plans under his sovereign authority.
Biblical scholars still cannot conclusively identify Gog of the land of Magog with a particular historical person or modern nation. Yet the uncertainty surrounding Gog’s identity does not make God’s Word uncertain. The emphasis of Ezekiel’s revelation is not on determining which nation Gog represents. Rather, it is that even if a vast power hostile to God’s people gathers under one leader, that power remains under the sovereignty of the LORD and will ultimately face his judgment.
Dearly beloved, the living God rules over the entire universe and everything in it. He governs the past, the present, and the future, indeed, all time and history. Even more astonishingly, our sins, mistakes, failures, and wounds do not lie outside God’s sovereignty and providence. God does not call sin good, nor does he declare us free from responsibility for it. Nevertheless, no sin or failure can frustrate his good and saving purpose.
Therefore, do not become afraid in advance by imagining the evil plans of those who oppose you. No matter how great a force the wicked may assemble, they cannot escape God’s sovereignty and will ultimately face his judgment. God acts for the sake of his holy name and glory. Through what he does, the whole world will know that the one who rules and judges all history is the LORD God.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Am I being controlled more by regret about the past or anxiety about the future?
- Am I repeatedly imagining what someone might do against me instead of entrusting the situation to God?
- Is there a sin I need to confess, a wrong I need to make right, or a wound I need to place in God’s hands?
- What is one faithful step of obedience God is asking me to take today?
- How can I remind myself this week that I cannot control time, but I can trust the God who rules over all time?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for ruling over the past, the present, and the future.
Forgive me for repeatedly dwelling on past regrets and trying to control what lies ahead.
When I feel threatened by the plans of others, keep fear from ruling my heart.
Help me remember that no evil plan can escape Your authority or frustrate Your saving purpose.
Teach me to stop replaying the past, surrender the future to You, and faithfully obey You today.
May my life reveal that You alone are the sovereign and holy LORD.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Ezekiel 38:1-13, ESV).
1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him 3 and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 And I will turn you about and put hooks into your jaws, and I will bring you out, and all your army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed in full armor, a great host, all of them with buckler and shield, wielding swords. 5 Persia, Cush, and Put are with them, all of them with shield and helmet; 6 Gomer and all his hordes; Beth-togarmah from the uttermost parts of the north with all his hordes—many peoples are with you.
7 “Be ready and keep ready, you and all your hosts that are assembled about you, and be a guard for them. 8 After many days you will be mustered. In the latter years you will go against the land that is restored from war, the land whose people were gathered from many peoples upon the mountains of Israel, which had been a continual waste. Its people were brought out from the peoples and now dwell securely, all of them. 9 You will advance, coming on like a storm. You will be like a cloud covering the land, you and all your hordes, and many peoples with you.
10 “Thus says the Lord GOD: On that day, thoughts will come into your mind, and you will devise an evil scheme 11 and say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will fall upon the quiet people who dwell securely, all of them dwelling without walls, and having no bars or gates,’ 12 to seize spoil and carry off plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places that are now inhabited, and the people who were gathered from the nations, who have acquired livestock and goods, who dwell at the center of the earth. 13 Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish and all its leaders will say to you, ‘Have you come to seize spoil? Have you assembled your hosts to carry off plunder, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to seize great spoil?’
