Biblical gratitude is not based only on good circumstances, but on the goodness of God and His steadfast love that endures forever.

3. ✝️ Psalm 107:1–22

Psalm 107 calls the redeemed to give thanks to the LORD, for He is good and His steadfast love endures forever. God delivered those who wandered hungry and thirsty, those bound in darkness, and those suffering because of sin when they cried to Him. Therefore, His people must thank Him, offer sacrifices of thanksgiving, and proclaim His wondrous works with songs of joy.

5. 📝 Reflection

Have you ever thought about why you give thanks in your daily life? If not, it would be good to take a moment to think about it today.

To help us understand this more objectively, let us begin with an example close to us: a pet dog. A dog rejoices when its owner calls, rejoices when it goes out for a walk, and rejoices when it receives delicious food. But can we really say that the dog is thankful to its owner? When we think carefully about it, the dog certainly has reasons to be happy, but it is difficult to call those reasons gratitude. This is because joy may be understood as an instinctive response in a dog, but gratitude cannot be fully explained merely as instinct. In other words, we are left with the question of whether a dog truly has the heart or reason necessary for gratitude.

Then what about human beings? We are capable of both joy and gratitude. But are joy and gratitude the same kind of emotional expression? If joy belongs closely to the realm of instinct, can gratitude also be placed in the same category? As we considered through the example of the dog, joy is closer to an emotional response, but gratitude requires recognizing the reason for thanksgiving and reflecting on why we ought to give thanks. Therefore, gratitude cannot be understood simply as instinct.

Now let us return to the original question. Why do we give thanks in our daily lives? To answer this question, we must first identify the reason for our gratitude. Then we must examine the result that comes from that reason and consider whether it is truly sufficient as a reason for thanksgiving. This entire process requires rational reflection, not merely an instinctive reaction.

Today’s QT passage lists clear reasons for thanksgiving. Yet when we read the passage carefully, we find that these reasons are not only reasons for gratitude but also reasons for joy. Nevertheless, the writer of Psalm 107 ultimately sings of thanksgiving. Why is that?

Dear beloved congregation, the gratitude spoken of in Scripture is not merely an expression of emotion. The Bible teaches that we may give thanks because we rejoice, but it also teaches us to give thanks even in sorrow (cf. Habakkuk 3:17–18). Why? Because God is good, and His steadfast love endures forever. Because we acknowledge and trust this God, we do not stop at simply rejoicing; we move forward into thanksgiving.

Therefore, biblical gratitude is more than a response to our circumstances. It is a confession of faith that God is still good and faithful. May you take one step beyond joy today and offer to God a song of thanksgiving.

Today, help me move beyond simple happiness and offer You true thanksgiving.

May my life proclaim Your wondrous works with songs of joy.

1 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 Let the redeemed of the LORD say so,
whom he has redeemed from trouble
3 and gathered in from the lands,
from the east and from the west,
from the north and from the south.

4 Some wandered in desert wastes,
finding no way to a city to dwell in;
5 hungry and thirsty,
their soul fainted within them.
6 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble,
and he delivered them from their distress.
7 He led them by a straight way
