Today’s passage reminds us:
What truly saves us is not revenge, but God’s steadfast love.
3. ✝️ Psalm 109:17-31
The psalmist asks the LORD to repay his accusers who loved cursing and rejected blessing. Poor, needy, weak, and scorned, he pleads for deliverance according to God’s steadfast love. Though enemies curse, God will bless, vindicate His servant, and stand at the right hand of the needy to save him from condemnation (Ps. 109:17-31).

5. 📝 Reflection
The world tells us that revenge is sweet, satisfying, and even admirable. Yet Scripture asks us a deeper question: Can completed revenge truly heal a wounded soul?
In Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables, there is a scene that helps us reflect deeply on this question. Jean Valjean is given the opportunity to kill Javert, the man who has pursued him throughout his life. Javert also assumes that Valjean will surely take revenge, and he gives up all hope. But Valjean unties him and says, “Javert, you are free.” Instead of revenge, Valjean chooses mercy.
We often think that revenge will make us feel relieved and happy. But true victory is not found in destroying our enemies. Valjean did not defeat Javert by killing him; he defeated him by sparing his life. The revenge of the world may destroy a person’s body, but mercy and forgiveness shake the soul. Javert, who believed that only law and punishment were right, finds his entire life shaken before the mercy Valjean shows him.
The psalmist in Psalm 109, which we meditate on today, is also in a deeply unjust situation. Wicked and deceitful people oppose and attack him. They repay his good with evil and his love with hatred. Yet the psalmist does not try to save himself by taking revenge with his own hands. Instead of lifting a sword against his enemies, he lifts his hands in prayer before God. “Save me according to your steadfast love.” This is the path of salvation chosen by the psalmist in Psalm 109.
Beloved brothers and sisters, believers are not people who prove their innocence with swords in their hands. Believers are people who testify to God’s hesed love through the prayers they offer to Him. Therefore, what truly saves us is not revenge, but God’s hesed love. Our salvation is not in our hands. Our salvation is in the name of the Lord and in His steadfast love.
6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?
- Is there someone I am tempted to “get back at,” even quietly in my heart?
- What would it look like today to bring my pain to God instead of carrying revenge in my own hands?
- How can I practice mercy without ignoring wisdom, truth, or healthy boundaries?
- Am I trusting revenge to heal me, or am I trusting God’s steadfast love to save me?
7. 🙏 Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for seeing me when I feel hurt, accused, or misunderstood.
Help me not to take revenge into my own hands.
Teach me to bring my wounds, anger, and desire for justice before You.
Save me according to Your steadfast love.
Help me trust Your justice, receive Your mercy, and reflect Your hesed love today.

17 He loved to curse; let curses come upon him!
He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him!
18 He clothed himself with cursing as his coat;
may it soak into his body like water,
like oil into his bones!
19 May it be like a garment that he wraps around him,
like a belt that he puts on every day!
20 May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD,
of those who speak evil against my life!
21 But you, O GOD my Lord,
deal on my behalf for your name’s sake;
because your steadfast love is good, deliver me!
22 For I am poor and needy,
and my heart is stricken within me.
