Today’s passage reminds us:

When people reject what God has chosen, God can turn apparent defeat into marvelous salvation. Jesus Christ is the cornerstone on whom we can safely build our lives.

3. ✝️ Psalm 118:8-29

It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people or rulers. Surrounded and near defeat, the psalmist prevails because the LORD is his strength and salvation. Spared from death, he will live and proclaim God’s deeds. The rejected stone becomes the cornerstone by the LORD’s marvelous work. The people pray for salvation, rejoice in the day God made, and thank him for his enduring love.

4. 📖 Key Verse

The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. This is the LORD’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes (vv. 22-23).

5. 📝 Reflection

Recently, the final upper structure was installed at the top of the Tower of Jesus Christ, the highest point of the Sagrada Família, completing the exterior of its central tower. The entire basilica is not yet finished. Nevertheless, people have responded with great enthusiasm because the Tower of Jesus Christ—the center and highest point of the basilica—has finally been completed after 144 years of construction. This is a historic milestone that completes the vertical axis envisioned by the architect Antoni Gaudí. Moreover, the long and difficult journey toward this achievement has made it even more moving.

Contrary to what many people believe, Gaudí was not the basilica’s original architect. Nor did people at that time show the level of interest in the building that they do today. Although it now stands in the heart of Barcelona, it was then merely a long-term religious construction project located on the outskirts of the city.

Gaudí’s immense vision did not begin to appear clearly before the public until 1925, more than forty years after he took charge of the project, when the first tower of the Nativity Façade was completed. After Gaudí’s death, the Spanish Civil War brought severe damage to the crypt and his workshop. Numerous drawings and photographs were lost, and his plaster models were badly damaged. During the COVID-19 pandemic, construction was also temporarily suspended because donations and visitor revenue fell sharply.

After passing through these many hardships, the cross atop the Tower of Jesus Christ was finally completed. Significantly, this milestone came in the year marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death. This historical background has made the tower’s completion even more meaningful and moving.

In today’s passage, the psalmist confesses that the LORD delivered him from the enemies who surrounded him. Because the LORD became his strength, his song, and his salvation, glad songs of victory resound in the tents of the righteous. The psalmist also praises God for taking the stone that the builders rejected as useless and making it the cornerstone, declaring that this is the LORD’s marvelous work.

Yes, this is true. The psalmist did not take God’s answer to his cry for granted. Rather, because God’s work of salvation was so marvelous, he called everyone to praise the LORD and give thanks to him.

Dear believers, there is good reason why people are so captivated by the story of the Sagrada Família and Gaudí. It tells of something that once seemed impossible becoming a reality, and of several generations carrying forward a vision that transcended the lifetime of one person.

If the story of one architect and one building can move our hearts so deeply, how much more mysterious and beautiful are the Creator’s plan of salvation and the story of Jesus Christ? God made Jesus Christ—the stone rejected by people—the cornerstone of salvation. Through Christ, he has delivered us who were surrounded by sin and death.

Today, let us praise and thank God, who established Jesus Christ as the cornerstone and saved us. Let us also remember that this marvelous and beautiful story of salvation is God’s own story of love for each of us.

Our heavenly Father, thank You for being my strength, my song, and my salvation.

Thank You for making Jesus Christ, the stone rejected by people, the cornerstone of my salvation.

When I feel rejected, overwhelmed, or uncertain about my future, help me remember that You have not abandoned me.

May my life proclaim Your marvelous work and Your steadfast love.
