Today’s passage reminds us:

God calls us to receive his Word faithfully, speak his truth courageously, and leave the response to him.

3. ✝️ Ezekiel 33:1-9

The LORD compares Ezekiel’s calling to that of a watchman. When he sees the sword coming, he must sound the trumpet. Those who ignore the warning bear responsibility for their death, but a silent watchman is accountable for the lives lost. God appoints Ezekiel as Israel’s watchman to hear his word and warn the wicked to turn. If they refuse, they die in their sin, but Ezekiel delivers his soul.

“So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me” (v. 7).

5. 📝 Reflection

I once had a quiet sense of pride in not being ashamed to be called an evangelist. This was because the message I proclaimed was the “Good News.” God so loved the world that he sent his beloved Son, Jesus Christ, and whoever believes in his name receives eternal life. The gospel is, in the truest sense, good news. Therefore, proclaiming this good news as an evangelist was a source of great joy for me.

After becoming a pastor, however, I realized that I could not preach only messages that people would find pleasant to hear. The gospel is the joyful news of salvation and life for those who believe, but for those who persist in distancing themselves from God and disobeying him, it reveals that they remain under his judgment. The Word of God proclaimed by a pastor contains not only the promise of salvation but also warnings against sin and declarations of judgment. After realizing this, the gospel paradoxically came to carry even greater importance and weight for me.

When God called Ezekiel to be a watchman, the mission entrusted to him was unmistakably clear. Whether God’s word contained a promise of salvation or a warning of judgment, Ezekiel had to proclaim it exactly as he had received it. Who, then, bears a watchman-like responsibility today? Is this responsibility given only to pastors and missionaries?

Ezekiel was a prophet specially appointed to proclaim God’s word to Israel. Today, pastors and church leaders likewise bear a particular responsibility to teach the whole counsel of God and care for the souls of believers. Nevertheless, the calling to bear witness to the gospel and encourage one another has been given to every believer. Not every Christian is a watchman holding the same office as Ezekiel, but every Christian is a witness of Christ, called to share the message of life they have received with their family and neighbors.

Dear brothers and sisters, may you faithfully fulfill your calling as witnesses of the gospel today. The gospel we proclaim may sound uncomfortable to some, but we must never dilute or distort its essential message. Proclaim with joy and love the gospel that contains both the promise of salvation and the call to repentance. Faithfully sharing the gospel is the mission entrusted to us; how people respond to that message is their responsibility.

When have I remained silent because I was afraid of rejection or making someone uncomfortable?
Am I tempted to speak about God’s love while avoiding the gospel’s call to repentance and faith?
Who has God placed in my life who needs to hear or see the hope of Christ?
How can I speak the truth without becoming harsh, judgmental, or argumentative?
What is one practical step I can take today to become a faithful witness?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ.

Forgive me for the times I have remained silent because I was afraid of rejection or discomfort.

Give me courage to speak the truth, humility to speak without judging others, and love that sincerely desires their salvation.

Help me fulfill my responsibility faithfully while trusting You with the results.

Amen.

📖 (Ezekiel 33:1-9, ESV).

1 The word of the LORD came to me: 2 “Son of man, speak to your people and say to them, If I bring the sword upon a land, and the people of the land take a man from among them, and make him their watchman, 3 and if he sees the sword coming upon the land and blows the trumpet and warns the people, 4 then if anyone who hears the sound of the trumpet does not take warning, and the sword comes and takes him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. 5 He heard the sound of the trumpet and did not take warning; his blood shall be upon himself. But if he had taken warning, he would have saved his life. 6 But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman’s hand.
7 “So you, son of man, I have made a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. 8 If I say to the wicked, O wicked one, you shall surely die, and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from his way, that wicked person shall die in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at your hand. 9 But if you warn the wicked to turn from his way, and he does not turn from his way, that person shall die in his iniquity, but you will have delivered your soul.
