❤️‍🩹 When One Member Suffers, We All Suffer | 1 Corinthians 12 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you see the church as the body of Christ, where every member matters and no one suffers alone.

2. πŸ“… June 6, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

The church is the body of Christ, where every member is needed, every pain is shared, and every gift is given for love and service.

3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 12:21-31

Paul teaches that the church is the body of Christ, where no member can say to another, “I have no need of you.” God gives greater honor to the weaker or less honored members so that there may be no division, but mutual care. When one member suffers, all suffer together; when one is honored, all rejoice together. God gives different gifts to the church, and believers should desire the higher gifts while following the more excellent way Paul will show.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together (v. 26).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

Let us imagine this for a moment. Suppose you are seriously ill and admitted to a hospital for treatment. However, because there are no empty rooms available, you end up sharing one room with five other patients. Night falls, but although your body is exhausted from various tests and diagnoses, you cannot fall asleep because of the deep pain you are experiencing. Meanwhile, the other patients in the room are sound asleep. Some are even snoring.

If you became angry at that sight, woke them up, and shouted, “I feel like I am dying from pain, and yet you can sleep?” how do you think they would respond? Most likely, they would think something was wrong with you, or they might call a nurse and ask for help. After all, everyone in that hospital room is carrying their own pain. Just because my pain feels great does not mean that others have no pain.

In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul teaches about various spiritual gifts and the members of the body. God has given different gifts and appointed different members in the church in order to make the community one. The presence of more visible and less visible members is not meant to create comparison, but to lead the members to care for and serve one another.

To explain this, Paul uses a very vivid word: “to suffer.” This Greek verb is used in the New Testament primarily to describe the sufferings of Jesus. Therefore, Paul’s teaching may be understood as saying that the church is not merely a gathering of people, but a community of members who bear the cross together.

Dear beloved saints, have you ever resented others because they did not recognize your pain? On the other hand, have you ever ignored the pain of another member? The church is a community where, if one member suffers, all the members suffer together. And when one member receives honor and rejoices, all the members rejoice together.

This is the living body of Christ. May we become members who do not turn away from one another’s pain, who share in one another’s joy, and who build up the kind of community that pleases God.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Is there someone in your church, small group, family, or community whose pain you may have overlooked?
  • Are you carrying suffering alone instead of allowing trusted believers to pray with you?
  • Do you find it hard to rejoice when someone else is honored or recognized?
  • How can you use your gift this week to care for another member of Christ’s body?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for making us members of Your body.

Forgive us for comparing ourselves with others, ignoring those who suffer, or trying to live the Christian life alone.

Teach us to notice the pain of others and to rejoice when others are honored.

Make our church a living body that reflects Your compassion, humility, and cross-bearing love.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Corinthians 12:21-31, ESV).

21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.
