🎁 Use Your Gifts to Build Others Up | 1 Corinthians 14 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you see how the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not given for self-promotion, but for building up the church in love.

2. πŸ“… June 9, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Spiritual gifts are not for personal pride, but for strengthening, encouraging, and building up the church.

3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 14:1-12

Paul urges believers to pursue love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially prophecy. Tongues speak to God and build up the speaker, but prophecy strengthens, encourages, and comforts the church through understandable words. Therefore, spiritual gifts should be sought not for personal benefit, but for building up the church.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church (v. 12).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

The company where I worked for many years was very committed to employee training, and it was also excellent in that area. From the moment they hired new employees, they looked for people with strong potential. During the first few years after hiring, the company invested significant time and resources in developing each employee’s abilities.

After the training program for new employees was completed, they were assigned to their actual positions and began to use their abilities in the workplace. However, the company’s training did not end there. As employees advanced in rank and gained more years of experience, additional training programs were provided to help them grow to the next level. The company continued to train and support its employees so that, through each course, they could become more capable and mature workers.

This leads us to an important question. Why did the company put so much effort into developing its employees’ abilities? What impact did the growth of each employee have on the company that made the company so committed to training and improving its programs?

The reason is very clear. As employees grow in their abilities, the company also benefits. In other words, employee training was one of the company’s key strategies for growth and profit.

Beloved brothers and sisters, the reason God pours out the gifts of the Holy Spirit abundantly upon His children, whom He has called into the church, is also for the sake of the church. If even a worldly company seeks growth and benefit through employee training, it should not surprise us that God’s church becomes richer and stronger through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

In fact, this is God’s grace. God is fully able to build His church by Himself, yet He gives spiritual gifts to weak and imperfect believers so that they may participate in the work of building up the church. Through this process, believers come to share in the grace and abundance of God.

May you today participate in the grace of building up the church through the gifts God has given you, and may you enjoy His abundant grace.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Am I more focused on discovering my gift or on using my gift to build up others?
  • Am I tempted to use my abilities for attention, recognition, or personal validation?
  • Who is one person I can encourage, serve, or build up this week?
  • How can my gifts help others see Christ more clearly?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving spiritual gifts to Your people.

Help me not to use what You have given me for pride, attention, or self-promotion.

Teach me to pursue love and to use my words, abilities, and opportunities to build up Your church.

Use me for the good of Your people and for the glory of Christ.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Corinthians 14:1-12, ESV).

1 Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. 2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. 3 On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. 4 The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church. 5 Now I want you all to speak in tongues, but even more to prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be built up. 6 Now, brothers, if I come to you speaking in tongues, how will I benefit you unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or teaching? 7 If even lifeless instruments, such as the flute or the harp, do not give distinct notes, how will anyone know what is played? 8 And if the bugle gives an indistinct sound, who will get ready for battle? 9 So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, 11 but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me. 12 So with yourselves, since you are eager for manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in building up the church.
