Today’s passage reminds us:

Not loving the Lord is already a cursed condition, but loving the Lord is already blessing and grace in Christ.

3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 16:13-24

Paul urges the Corinthians to stay watchful, stand firm in the faith, be strong and courageous, and do everything in love. He calls them to honor Stephanas’s household and other faithful workers who serve and refresh the saints. With greetings from the churches, Paul ends with a solemn call to love the Lord, the prayer, “Our Lord, come,” and a blessing of Jesus’ grace and love in Christ.

4. 📖 Key Verse

If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come! (v. 22).

5. 📝 Reflection

Paul’s statement today, “If anyone does not love the Lord, let him be accursed,” is a deeply striking expression. When we consider the nuance of the Greek text, it does not simply mean, “If someone does not love the Lord, a curse will come upon them as a result.” Rather, it is closer to saying that not loving the Lord is itself already a curse. In other words, for those who do not love the Lord, the very absence of love for Him is already a cursed condition. Conversely, for those who love the Lord, loving Him is already a blessing. At the end of his first letter to the Corinthian church, Paul reminds them that although the church had many problems, those who love the Lord are already blessed.

We find a similar teaching in the words of Jesus. When Nicodemus came to Him late at night, Jesus spoke with him about being born again and receiving eternal life. He said, “Whoever believes in Him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God” (John 3:18). This verse does not merely mean, “If you do not believe, you will be judged later.” It shows that the state of unbelief itself is already a state under judgment. Therefore, God grants eternal life to everyone who believes in the name of His Son, so that they may not perish (John 3:16).

Beloved brothers and sisters, this is the gospel. This is the confession of Maranatha. To love the Lord and believe in His name is itself a blessing and grace. Are you enjoying this blessing and grace today? Are you living with joy as you wait for the Lord who will come again?

What we need now is not to burden ourselves with anxious striving in order to love the Lord and believe in His name. Rather, we are called to joyfully enjoy the blessing and eternal life that God has given us as a gift, and to share that grace with our neighbors. When we live this way, the confession “Maranatha” will become not merely words on our lips, but the shared confession of faith of our church.

6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Am I treating faith as a burden to earn God’s blessing, or am I enjoying Jesus as the greatest blessing of my life?
  • Do I truly believe that loving the Lord is already grace?
  • Where am I tempted to seek blessing apart from Christ?
  • What is one area of my life where I need to live with more “Maranatha” hope today?
  • Who around me needs to experience the grace and hope of Jesus through me this week?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for loving me first and giving me eternal life as a gift.

Teach me to enjoy the grace I already have in You.

Let my heart love You more deeply, wait for You more joyfully, and share Your grace more freely.

May “Maranatha” become not only my words, but my daily hope and way of life.

Amen.
