Today’s passage reminds us:
The greatest tragedy in life is not losing power, wealth, or security, but standing under God’s judgment as His opponent.
3. ✝️ Nahum 2:8-13
Nineveh, once full like a pool of water, is now fleeing with no one turning back. Its silver, gold, and endless treasures are plundered, and the city becomes desolate and ruined. Like a lion’s den once filled with prey, Nineveh had lived by violence, but the LORD of hosts declares, “I am against you,” and brings its power, prey, and voice to an end.

5. 📝 Reflection
What kind of city was Nineveh when Nahum’s oracle was proclaimed? As the capital of Assyria, the superpower of its day, Nineveh was a city full of people like a pool filled with water. It was filled with countless precious things and immeasurable treasures. It was also like a lion’s den, a city of great power that became an object of fear to the surrounding nations.
Dear brothers and sisters, would it not seem happy to live in such a place? If the capital of a modern nation looked like this, would not many people eagerly dream of moving or immigrating there? If it were a place where dreams could come true, where everyone could live abundantly and happily, and where surrounding nations would not dare to invade, Nineveh would have been the number one city where everyone wanted to live.
But what happened to that city, Nineveh? Its many people fled without even looking back. Its abundant treasures were all plundered. And Nineveh, once like a lion’s den and a symbol of terror, disappeared without a trace and became an object of mockery. Then let me ask again: if you were told to go and live in such a place, would you go? Perhaps it became the number one city where no one wanted to live anymore.
Then why did Nineveh, once so powerful, end up in this condition? Did it collapse on its own? Was it simply defeated by surrounding powers? Today’s QT passage gives us the answer in verse 13: “Behold, I am against you.”
Historically, Nineveh’s destruction came through defeat in war. But Scripture clearly reveals a deeper spiritual reality. Their true tragedy was that God, the Creator and Ruler of the entire universe, became their opponent and judged them.
Dear beloved saints, we often think the most pitiable people in the world are those without vision, without a healthy self-image, still bound by the past, or lacking the strength and courage to overcome adversity. But Scripture speaks differently. The most pitiable people in the world are those who hear God say, “I am against you. I will strike you.”
Therefore, do not make God your opponent today. Remember His mercy and grace. May you repent and turn back daily, and may you practice holy obedience in your life.
6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where am I depending more on success, money, comfort, status, or control than on God?
- Am I ignoring God’s warning because my life still looks stable on the outside?
- Is there any sin, attitude, relationship, or habit I need to repent of today?
- Am I treating God’s patience as permission to keep living my own way?
- What would holy obedience look like today in my work, school, relationships, church, or private life?
7. 🙏 Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for Your mercy and grace.
Please do not let me build my life against You.
Help me not to trust in wealth, success, comfort, popularity, or my own strength.
Give me a heart that hears Your warning and turns back quickly.
Teach me to repent sincerely, obey faithfully, and live humbly before You.
May my life not stand against You, but be surrendered to You.

8 Nineveh is like a pool
whose waters run away.
“Halt! Halt!” they cry,
but none turns back.
9 Plunder the silver,
plunder the gold!
There is no end of the treasure
or of the wealth of all precious things.
10 Desolate! Desolation and ruin!
Hearts melt and knees tremble;
anguish is in all loins;
all faces grow pale!
11 Where is the lions’ den,
the feeding place of the young lions,
where the lion and lioness went,
where his cubs were, with none to disturb?
12 The lion tore enough for his cubs
and strangled prey for his lionesses;
he filled his caves with prey
and his dens with torn flesh.
13 Behold, I am against you, declares the LORD of hosts, and I will burn your chariots in smoke, and the sword shall devour your young lions. I will cut off your prey from the earth, and the voice of your messengers shall no longer be heard.
