πŸ™Œ God Chooses the Weak: Stop Proving Yourself | 1 Corinthians 1 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to show you where your confidence truly comes from.

2. πŸ“… May 12, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

God chooses the weak and overlooked so that we may boast only in Christ.

3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

Paul reminds the Corinthians to consider their calling: not many were wise, powerful, or of noble birth according to worldly standards. Yet God chose what is foolish, weak, low, and despised in the world to shame the wise and strong, so that no human being may boast before Him. In Christ Jesus, believers receive wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption from God, therefore anyone who boasts must boast only in the Lord.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth (v. 26).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

I once heard a story from a missionary serving in the Arab world. As many of you know, to believe in Jesus in that region often means being cast out of one’s family with nothing. In some cases, it even requires a willingness to risk one’s life. Perhaps for this reason, many of those who decide to follow Jesus come from socially vulnerable or marginalized backgrounds. In powerful and wealthy families, there are relatively few who believe in Jesus, and even if some do, it is not easy for them to openly reveal their faith. Many who attend local churches are far from being social leaders or people of influence. Yet I still remember how proudly the missionary said, “When it comes to their passionate love for Jesus, they are second to none.”

After Jesus died on the cross, rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, the early church began through the remaining disciples. At first, Jewish Christians were at the center of the church, but as Gentile believers gradually joined, the early church spread beyond Jerusalem throughout the Mediterranean world. One of those churches was the church in Corinth. During his second missionary journey, Paul arrived in Corinth and met Aquila and Priscilla. He worked with them as a tentmaker and preached the gospel every Sabbath in the synagogue to both Jews and Greeks. The church that Paul established on the foundation of the gospel was the Corinthian church (see Acts 18).

To that very church, Paul now says, “Not many of you were wise by worldly standards. Not many were powerful. Not many were of noble birth. Instead, many of you were regarded by the world as lowly, despised, and nothing at all. But this is not something shameful. Rather, it is God’s purpose, so that you may boast not in yourselves but in the grace by which you have been saved.”

Dear beloved believers, is there anyone in the community who boasts in wisdom, ability, wealth, or family background? None of these things can help us in our salvation. In fact, they can easily become obstacles that keep us from coming before God. On the other hand, like believers in the Arab world, those who are poor and weak in the eyes of the world may sometimes be more ready to hold on to Jesus without hesitation.

Therefore, if you find yourself in a place of poverty or weakness today, do not resent it. Instead, may you give thanks for the grace of God who has called you and saved you in that very place.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • What worldly standards do I often use to measure my worth?
  • Where do I feel weak, ordinary, or overlooked right now?
  • How is God inviting me to depend on Christ instead of proving myself?
  • What would it look like today to boast in the Lord rather than in my achievements, background, or abilities?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me by Your grace.

Forgive me for measuring myself and others by worldly standards.

Teach me not to boast in my wisdom, strength, background, achievements, or success.

Help me to boast only in Christ, who has become my wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.

Use even my weakness to reveal Your grace and glory.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Corinthians 1:26-31, ESV).

26 For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27 But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28 God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
