The Only Sign You Need: Jesus’ Resurrection πŸŒ… | Matthew 12 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to show you why Jesus’ resurrection is the only sign you truly need, and what it means to belong to His family today.

2. πŸ“… February 11, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

The greatest sign is Jesus’ resurrection, and God’s true family lives in obedience to His will.

3. ✝️ Matthew 12:38-50

When the scribes and Pharisees demand a sign, Jesus offers only the sign of Jonah: just as Jonah was three days in the fish, the Son of Man will be three days in the earth, and this unrepentant generation will be condemned by Nineveh and the queen of the South, though someone greater is here.He warns that an unclean spirit may return with worse spirits to an empty, merely “tidied” life, making the final state worse—just like this evil generation without true repentance.Pointing to His disciples, Jesus teaches that whoever does His Father’s will is His real brother, sister, and mother, redefining family as the obedient community of God’s kingdom.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (vv. 39-40).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

The number of Jesus’ signs recorded in Scripture can vary depending on how we classify them, but when we look from the perspective of the seven signs in the Gospel of John, there are said to be roughly thirty-five. These signs can be largely grouped into two categories. One is signs related to nature, such as calming the wind and the waves. The other is signs related to people, such as casting out demons, healing diseases, and even raising the dead. Of course, Jesus performed far more signs than these, but Scripture does not record them all (John 20:30).

Then among these many signs of Jesus, what is the most important sign? In today’s QT passage, Jesus gives a clear answer to this question. This evil and adulterous generation keeps seeking a sign, yet what they truly should pay attention to is this one thing:the sign that the Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth for three days and three nights, and then rise again to judge the whole world.

There is a clear basis for this claim. According to the will of God the Father, Jesus came to this earth, died on the cross, and rose again, so that all who believe in His name may receive eternal life. In other words, among the many signs of Jesus, the greatest sign of all is His own resurrection.

If we truly believe this sign, we will no longer allow unclean spirits to reclaim our hearts and our lives as their dwelling place. We may be persecuted by our families and neighbors because of the name of Jesus, yet at the same time, we will gain a new family in His name—the family of God.

Dear brothers and sisters, do not be deceived by all the groundless “signs” overflowing on social networks. Do not wander here and there trying to experience those signs. For us, the one most important sign is the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact, the moment we decided to believe in Jesus, we already indirectly experienced this sign of resurrection through the grace of faith given by God. And when we finally enter heaven, we will experience this resurrection directly.

I bless you today to hold firmly to this hope and to live out God’s will in your daily life.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where am I still asking God for more “signs” instead of trusting the cross and resurrection of Jesus?
  • Is my life just “cleaned up” on the outside, or is Jesus truly filling and leading me from the inside?
  • What is one practical way I can live as part of God’s family—loving, obeying, and serving with other believers—today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You that Your death and resurrection are the greatest sign of God’s love for me.

Fill my heart so my life is not just “tidied up” but truly changed by Your Spirit.

Teach me to do the Father’s will and live as a faithful member of Your family.

May my life point others to You.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered him, saying, “Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.” 39 But he answered them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. 42 The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, something greater than Solomon is here.

43 “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

46 While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. 48 But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” 49 And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 50 For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.” (Matthew 12:38-50, ESV).
