How to Guard Truth in Love π‘️ | 2 John Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you discern truth and stay rooted in His Word.
2. π January 10, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Truth matters—love others without compromising the gospel.
3. ✝️ 2 John 1:1-13
John writes to a faithful believer and her children, celebrating their walk in truth and urging them to love one another by obeying God’s commands. He warns against false teachers who deny Jesus and instructs believers not to support them. John longs for face-to-face fellowship to complete their joy.
4. π Key Verse
If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works (v. 10-11).
5. π Reflection
It’s easy to take a Bible verse out of context and make it say what we want. For example, Job 8:7—“Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be”—is often quoted as a promise, but it was actually bad advice from Job’s friend.
Today’s passage can sound harsh, like cutting people off completely. But John’s point is about protecting truth. In the early church, hospitality was a big deal. Inviting someone into your home meant endorsing them. So welcoming false teachers could spread lies about Jesus.
What about us? False teaching isn’t always obvious—it can sneak in through social media, podcasts, or even friends. Are we discerning what influences we allow into our lives? Are we unknowingly supporting ideas that pull us away from Christ? Stay awake. Stay rooted in Scripture. Truth matters.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where am I letting unhealthy influences shape my faith?
- How can I show love without endorsing falsehood?
- What steps can I take to stay grounded in God’s truth?
7. π Prayer
Lord, help me discern truth and guard my heart from deception.
Give me wisdom to set healthy boundaries and courage to stand firm in Your Word.
May my life reflect Your truth and love today.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 1 The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, 2 because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.
4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5 And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6 And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8 Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, 11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.
12 Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete. 13 The children of your elect sister greet you (2 John 1:1-13, ESV).
