Faith Is Not Waiting π | Joshua 18 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to give you a heart that trusts His promises and steps out in obedience.
2. π December 13, 2025
Today’s passage reminds us:
Faith is not passive—step into God’s promises with courage.
3. ✝️ Joshua 18:1-10
The whole congregation of Israel gathers at Shiloh and sets up the tent of meeting. Seven tribes still have not received their inheritance. Joshua challenges them, asking, “How long will you put off taking possession of the land the LORD has given you?” He instructs them to appoint men to survey the land and write a description, then return to him. Joshua will cast lots before the LORD at Shiloh to divide the land among the tribes.
4. π Key Verse
“How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land, which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you?” (v. 3b)
5. π Reflection
One common misunderstanding among many Christians is that faith is completed by waiting. They expect God to work entirely and simply wait for His action, doing nothing in the meantime. Some even claim that what God does is far more effective than anything we could do.
But is faith really about doing nothing and waiting? If that were true, Joshua and the Israelites should have stayed east of the Jordan until God completely cleared the land of Canaan. If this analogy seems unclear, think of waiting to check into a hotel. We only move into the room once it is perfectly prepared. Was the promised land given to Israel in this way?
Dear friends, God is the One who can do everything perfectly. He created the entire universe. Yet today, He calls for our response—obedience and participation. He has called us to cover this world with the gospel of Jesus Christ. How long will we delay this calling? Now is the time to joyfully respond.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where have I been waiting instead of acting in faith?
- What step of obedience is God asking me to take today?
- How can I trust His promise as I move forward?
7. π Prayer
Lord, help me not to delay when You call me to act.
Give me courage to step into Your promises today.
Thank You for inviting me to join Your mission.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 1 Then the whole congregation of the people of Israel assembled at Shiloh and set up the tent of meeting there. The land lay subdued before them.
2 There remained among the people of Israel seven tribes whose inheritance had not yet been apportioned. 3 So Joshua said to the people of Israel, “How long will you put off going in to take possession of the land, which the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you? 4 Provide three men from each tribe, and I will send them out that they may set out and go up and down the land. They shall write a description of it with a view to their inheritances, and then come to me. 5 They shall divide it into seven portions. Judah shall continue in his territory on the south, and the house of Joseph shall continue in their territory on the north. 6 And you shall describe the land in seven divisions and bring the description here to me. And I will cast lots for you here before the LORD our God. 7 The Levites have no portion among you, for the priesthood of the LORD is their heritage. And Gad and Reuben and half the tribe of Manasseh have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan eastward, which Moses the servant of the LORD gave them.”
8 So the men arose and went, and Joshua charged those who went to write the description of the land, saying, “Go up and down in the land and write a description and return to me. And I will cast lots for you here before the LORD in Shiloh.” 9 So the men went and passed up and down in the land and wrote in a book a description of it by towns in seven divisions. Then they came to Joshua to the camp at Shiloh, 10 and Joshua cast lots for them in Shiloh before the LORD. And there Joshua apportioned the land to the people of Israel, to each his portion (Joshua 18:1-10, ESV).
