Refined by Fire: Zechariah 13 Devotional for Young Adults Seeking Purpose

 Why God Allows Trials πŸ”₯

  3. ✝️ Zechariah 13:1-9

  4. πŸ“– And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ ” (v. 9)

  5. πŸ“ Just as gold is refined through fire to remove impurities, God uses trials to purify His people. Zechariah 13:9 reminds us that testing restores our relationship with Him. Don’t fear the fire—embrace it with faith. God’s refining work leads to deeper trust, greater purity, and a stronger walk with Him.

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you trust His refining work in your life today.

2. πŸ“… October 28, 2025

Today’s passage reminds us:
God refines us through trials to restore our relationship with Him.

3. ✝️ Zechariah 13:1–9

God speaks through Zechariah about a time of cleansing and refining. He promises to purify His people—not to punish, but to restore. Like silver and gold refined in fire, God uses trials to remove what doesn’t belong and strengthen what does. In the end, His people will call on Him, and He will answer, saying, “They are my people.” (v.9)

4. πŸ“– Key Verse (ESV)

“And I will put this third into the fire,
and refine them as one refines silver,
and test them as gold is tested.
They will call upon my name, and I will answer them.
I will say, ‘They are my people’;
and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’” (Zechariah 13:9)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

To get pure gold, you need fire.
Gold ore is heated to over 1,000°C so impurities rise to the top and can be removed. But one round isn’t enough—it takes repeated refining to reach true purity.

That’s what God is doing in us.
Zechariah 13:9 shows that trials aren’t random—they’re God’s way of restoring us. He’s not trying to break us, but to make us whole. When we go through fire, we come out stronger, cleaner, and closer to Him.

So if you’re in a season of testing, don’t fear.
Lean into God. Trust that He’s working through the fire to refine your faith.
Let your response be worship, not worry.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Am I resisting the refining work God is doing in me?
  • What impurities might God be removing through this season?
  • How can I respond with faith and worship in the middle of trials?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, You are the Refiner of my heart.
Help me not to fear the fire, but to trust Your purpose in it.
Remove what doesn’t belong, and make me more like You.
Let me call on Your name with confidence, knowing You call me Your own.
Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 13 “On that day there shall be a fountain opened for the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

Idolatry Cut Off 2 “And on that day, declares the LORD of hosts, I will cut off the names of the idols from the land, so that they shall be remembered no more. And also I will remove from the land the prophets and the spirit of uncleanness. 3 And if anyone again prophesies, his father and mother who bore him will say to him, ‘You shall not live, for you speak lies in the name of the LORD.’ And his father and mother who bore him shall pierce him through when he prophesies. 4 “On that day every prophet will be ashamed of his vision when he prophesies. He will not put on a hairy cloak in order to deceive, 5 but he will say, ‘I am no prophet, I am a worker of the soil, for a man sold me in my youth.’ 6 And if one asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your back?’ he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends.’

The Shepherd Struck 7 “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the LORD of hosts.

“Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones. 8  In the whole land, declares the LORD, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive. 9  And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’ ” (Zech 13:1-9, ESV).
