⛪ Stop Performing, Start Building Up the Church | 1 Corinthians 14 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you use your words, gifts, and spiritual passion not for yourself, but to build up His church and help others see Him more clearly.

2. πŸ“… June 10, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Spiritual gifts are not given for self-expression alone, but for building up the church in love, wisdom, and clarity.

3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 14:13-25

Paul teaches that those who speak in tongues should pray for interpretation. Prayer and praise in the Spirit are valuable, but in the church, understandable words are more helpful for building others up. Uninterpreted tongues may confuse outsiders, but clear prophecy can convict hearts, reveal truth, and lead people to worship God and confess that He is truly among His people.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also (v. 15).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

At the beginning of last year, when I was unexpectedly forced to take a break from ministry, I held on to my heavy heart and began attending early morning prayer meetings every day. At first, I tried to set apart time to pray alone at home. However, since I was living with my family, it was not easy to fully separate the time and space for prayer. Praying alone in quietness certainly had its benefits, but I found that many distracting thoughts came to mind. In particular, negative thoughts such as resentment and complaint often interrupted my prayer. So I began attending the early morning prayer meetings held at the church.

As expected, the large sanctuary, the moving background music, and the voices of many believers praying together helped me concentrate more deeply in prayer. On some days, I became so focused that I continued praying until much time had passed and the sanctuary needed to be cleared.

But after some time, prayer gradually became difficult for me. The reason was a certain believer who sat in the middle of the sanctuary and prayed loudly in tongues. At first, that voice was simply one among the many sounds of prayer around me. But at some point, the believer’s loud and endlessly repeated words, whose meaning I could not understand, began to sound less like prayer and more like noise.

When someone asked that believer to pray a little more quietly, the person would pray quietly in tongues for a few days. But after some time, the loud prayer in tongues would begin again, filling the entire sanctuary. One day, I became so uncomfortable that I opened my eyes and looked toward that believer. Then I noticed that the seats around that person were empty, forming a large circle. At that moment, I thought, “I see. I am not the only one who feels uncomfortable.”

Dear brothers and sisters, praying in tongues is truly a precious thing. It can help a person remain focused in prayer for a long time, and it can also bring a sense of deep and intimate fellowship between oneself and God. However, as in the example I shared, loud and repetitive prayer in tongues that fills the whole sanctuary with words others cannot understand can make others uncomfortable.

In today’s passage, Paul teaches about tongues and prophecy, showing that every spiritual gift must be used for the purpose of building up the church. Therefore, no matter how good a gift may be, we need wisdom in discerning how to use it for the church that God has established. Through today’s Word, may we come to understand that our gifts and zeal are not meant merely for ourselves, but must be used to build up the church and benefit other believers.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Do my words bring clarity and encouragement, or do they create confusion and distance?
  • How can I practice both sincerity and wisdom in worship, prayer, service, or leadership this week?
  • What is one gift God is calling me to use for the good of others?
  • Am I using my gifts in a way that builds others up?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving spiritual gifts to Your people.

Help me not to use my gifts only for myself, but to build up Your church in love.

Teach me to pray and worship with both my spirit and my mind.

Give me wisdom to consider others, humility to serve others, and love to encourage others.

May my words, worship, and actions help people see that You are truly among us.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– (1 Corinthians 14:13-25, ESV).

13 Therefore, one who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unfruitful. 15 What am I to do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will pray with my mind also; I will sing praise with my spirit, but I will sing with my mind also. 16 Otherwise, if you give thanks with your spirit, how can anyone in the position of an outsider say “Amen” to your thanksgiving when he does not know what you are saying? 17 For you may be giving thanks well enough, but the other person is not being built up. 18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 Nevertheless, in church I would rather speak five words with my mind in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue. 20 Brothers, do not be children in your thinking. Be infants in evil, but in your thinking be mature. 21 In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” 22 Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers. 23 If, therefore, the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and outsiders or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are out of your minds? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or outsider enters, he is convicted by all, he is called to account by all, 25 the secrets of his heart are disclosed, and so, falling on his face, he will worship God and declare that God is really among you.
