π§ Your Life Is Not Random God Is Guiding You | Ruth 2 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you see that your life is not random, but held in His wise and gracious providence.
2. π May 3, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
What looks like coincidence to us is often God’s providence at work.
3. ✝️ Ruth 2:1-7
Naomi had a wealthy and worthy relative from Elimelech’s clan named Boaz. Ruth the Moabite went out to glean with Naomi’s permission, and though it seemed by chance, she came to the field belonging to Boaz. When Boaz arrived and blessed his workers in the name of the LORD, he noticed Ruth and learned that she was the Moabite woman who had returned with Naomi and had been diligently working since morning.
4. π Key Verse
So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech (v. 3).
5. π Reflection
People often say that many things in life happen by chance. So when good or bad things happen without our intention, we tend to think they happened accidentally. A lottery ticket given by a friend as a gift may happen to win, and an accident may happen on a familiar road we take every day to work. On a more serious level, we may think that relationships begin by chance, or that we meet the spouse with whom we will spend our lives by coincidence. That is why some people even say that repeated coincidences eventually become destiny.
However, one of the most dangerous views of chance appears in the theory of evolution. It claims that this world came into being by chance and that all living things also came into existence by accident. But the Bible does not speak that way.
As we read verse 3 of today’s passage, some may think that Ruth happened to glean in Boaz’s field by chance. Since the Bible records it that way, some may even argue that it truly happened accidentally. But those of you who have been doing Quiet Time with me for a long time surely understand what this sentence means.
Ruth, a foreign woman, had no idea that the field she entered in a strange land belonged to Boaz. But we know the truth. It was God who guided Ruth’s steps to Boaz’s field. Verse 3 describes the event from Ruth’s perspective. In reality, the Bible more clearly shows that the God whom Ruth confessed as her God was the One who led her there.
Dear beloved saints, do you think you were born by chance? The Bible says that our existence is not an accident but the result of God’s creation and providence (cf. Psalm 139:13). Do you think you are walking your present path by chance? The Bible says that even our steps are established by God (cf. Psalm 37:23). Do you think you came to believe in Jesus by chance? The Bible says that even our salvation is within God’s plan (cf. Ephesians 1:4-5).
The Bible testifies clearly—far more than we can list today—that there is no such thing as chance for the people of God. Everything is under God’s will and providence. May you firmly believe this truth today and live in obedience to the Word of God.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where in my life do I feel like things are random, uncertain, or out of control?
- Am I willing to trust that God is working even when I cannot see the full picture?
- What is one small step of obedience God is calling me to take today?
- How can I be faithful in ordinary responsibilities, just as Ruth was faithful in the field?
7. π Prayer
Lord, help me trust that my life is not random.
Even when I cannot see what You are doing, teach me to believe that You are guiding my steps.
Give me faith to obey You in ordinary moments.
Help me rest in Your wise and gracious providence.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Ruth 2:1-7, ESV).
1 Now Naomi had a relative of her husband’s, a worthy man of the clan of Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the field and glean among the ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find favor.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” 3 So she set out and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers, and she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the clan of Elimelech. 4 And behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem. And he said to the reapers, “The LORD be with you!” And they answered, “The LORD bless you.” 5 Then Boaz said to his young man who was in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?” 6 And the servant who was in charge of the reapers answered, “She is the young Moabite woman, who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. 7 She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves after the reapers.’ So she came, and she has continued from early morning until now, except for a short rest.”
