π§ When Your Rights Get in the Way of the Gospel | 1 Corinthians 9 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to show you what it means to use your freedom and rights for the sake of the gospel.
2. π May 27, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
The gospel teaches us not only to claim our rights, but to surrender them for Christ.
3. ✝️ 1 Corinthians 9:11-18
Paul explains that those who proclaim the gospel have the right to receive material support, just as the Lord commanded that gospel workers should live by the gospel. Yet Paul chose not to use this right, enduring everything so that he would not place any obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. For Paul, preaching the gospel was not a reason for boasting but a stewardship entrusted to him, and his reward was to offer the gospel free of charge without making full use of his rights.
4. π Key Verse
What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel (v. 18).
5. π Reflection
In modern society, people who cannot properly claim or enjoy their rights are often regarded as foolish. For this reason, many people make great efforts to protect and expand their rights. In fact, the Bill of Rights in the United States was born from the conviction that even the power of the government must be limited in order to safeguard individual rights.
But that is not all. Today, as individualism increasingly gives way to selfishness, people often become more outraged when others violate their rights than when they themselves violate the rights of others. Some even argue that helping and caring for others is only possible after their own rights have first been fully secured. In this way, it is no exaggeration to say that modern people are deeply committed to defending and expanding their own rights.
Yet, as if challenging the spirit of this age, Paul proclaims a completely different attitude. He says that he will claim no rights before the gospel. Although a preacher of the gospel has the rightful claim to receive support, Paul chooses not to make use of that right so that nothing would hinder the work of proclaiming the gospel.
Beloved saints, what are you laying down before the gospel? Do you believe that your sacrifice can become a channel through which the gospel is displayed more abundantly? May we, like Paul, lay down our rights before the gospel today, so that the gospel may be revealed more clearly through our lives.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Is there any right, comfort, or personal preference that I am holding onto too tightly?
- Do I think more about what I deserve, or about how my life can point others to Christ?
- Is there anything in my attitude, lifestyle, or relationships that may be creating an obstacle to the gospel?
- How can I use my freedom not just for myself, but for the spiritual good of others?
7. π Prayer
Our heavenly Father, thank You for giving me the gospel freely through Jesus Christ.
Forgive me for the times I have cared more about protecting my own rights than revealing Your love.
Help me lay down anything that becomes an obstacle to the gospel.
Like Paul, may I find joy not in claiming everything I deserve, but in making Christ known more clearly through my life.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (1 Corinthians 9:11-18, ESV).
11 If we have sown spiritual things among you, is it too much if we reap material things from you? 12 If others share this rightful claim on you, do not we even more? Nevertheless, we have not made use of this right, but we endure anything rather than put an obstacle in the way of the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who are employed in the temple service get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in the sacrificial offerings? 14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel. 15 But I have made no use of any of these rights, nor am I writing these things to secure any such provision. For I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of my ground for boasting. 16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward, but if not of my own will, I am still entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What then is my reward? That in my preaching I may present the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my right in the gospel.
