πΏ Speak Words That Give Life | Ruth 4 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to teach you how to use your words to bless, build up, and give life to others.
2. π May 8, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God’s people are called to speak words of blessing, not words that tear others down.
3. ✝️ Ruth 4:7-12
In former times in Israel, redeeming and exchanging were confirmed by one person drawing off his sandal and giving it to the other. Boaz declared before the elders and all the people that he had bought Naomi’s property and had taken Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, as his wife to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance. Then the elders and all the people blessed Ruth to be like Rachel and Leah, who built up the house of Israel, and blessed Boaz’s house to be like the house of Perez.
4. π Key Verse
“And may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman” (v. 12).
5. π Reflection
π There is a Korean proverb that says, “A single word can repay a debt of a thousand nyang.” This proverb means that words must be used carefully, and when spoken wisely, they can carry great power. That is why we often say, “Words have power.”
Yet even though words are so important, many people today use them carelessly. There are harsh words repeated thoughtlessly in the name of relieving stress, speech habits that feel awkward without profanity, gossip that tears others down again and again as if it were casual entertainment, negative self-talk that says, “I am a failure and a loser; my life has no worth,” hurtful words from parents such as, “I do not know why I ever had you,” insulting words from supervisors such as, “No wonder you are the way you are when you work like this,” and many other crude and careless words that diminish human dignity. This world is filled with so many negative words that it is painful even to list them.
In today’s passage, Boaz chooses to obey God’s law wholeheartedly. He not only redeems Naomi’s land, but also takes Ruth, the Moabite widow of Mahlon, as his wife in order to preserve the name of the dead through his inheritance. Then the people of Bethlehem bless Boaz, saying, “May the woman who is coming into your house be like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you prosper in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem. May your house be like the house of Perez.”
Boaz’s community blessed his marriage. They blessed Ruth, a foreign woman, to be used preciously within God’s covenant, just like the mothers of Israel. They also blessed Boaz’s house to be continued through Ruth, a foreign woman, just as the house of Judah had been continued through Tamar. And in the end, all these blessings were fulfilled (cf. 4:18-22).
Dear beloved saints, I sincerely pray that the language of our community will also become the language of blessing. The generation we live in does not need words of cursing that tear others down and despise them. More than ever, it needs words of blessing that sincerely seek the grace of God, just like the community of Boaz. We must not imitate a generation that divides people into sides and condemns one another. Instead, we must become a community of Jesus, where the children of God are united in Christ. For this to happen, what we need above all is the language of love. May our lips today become instruments that give life, build others up, and bless them in the name of the Lord.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Are my words usually life-giving or discouraging?
- Is there someone who needs to hear a word of blessing, encouragement, or prayer from me today?
- How can my online and offline speech better reflect the grace of Jesus?
- What negative words do I need to stop repeating over myself or others?
7. π Prayer
Lord, thank You for reminding me that words have power.
Forgive me for the times I have used my words carelessly, harshly, or selfishly.
Teach me to speak with wisdom, love, and grace.
Help me bless others instead of tearing them down.
Help me see people not by their past, background, weakness, or failure, but through Your grace and redemptive purpose.
May our community become a place where people are encouraged, restored, and built up in Christ.
Let our words reflect the heart of Jesus and become instruments of blessing.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Ruth 4:7-12, ESV).
7 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8 So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal. 9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. 10 Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.” 11 Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the LORD make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, 12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the LORD will give you by this young woman.”
