7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to teach you how to honor Him through faithful love, gratitude, and obedience in your family relationships.
2. π May 5, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Faith becomes visible when love is expressed through daily faithfulness.
3. ✝️ Ruth 2:17-23
Ruth gleaned in Boaz’s field until evening and gathered about an ephah of barley, which she brought back to Naomi along with leftover food. When Naomi learned that Ruth had worked in Boaz’s field, she blessed him and recognized him as a close relative and one of their redeemers. Following Naomi’s guidance, Ruth stayed close to Boaz’s young women and continued gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests while living with her mother-in-law.
4. π Key Verse
And she lived with her mother-in-law (v. 23b).
5. π Reflection
Long ago, a son carried his elderly father on his back with a wooden frame and went deep into the mountains. He thought he could no longer take care of his father. After leaving his father in the mountains, he was about to turn back when his young son, who had followed him, tried to take the wooden frame back home. When the father asked why, the child answered, “When you grow old, I will need this frame to carry you here too.” Hearing those words, the son was deeply convicted, brought his father back home, and cared for him again.
Does this story sound familiar? Similar stories have been passed down in many cultures around the world throughout history. This shows that honoring and caring for parents is an important value that transcends time and culture.
Today, Ruth, a foreign woman, came to Bethlehem in Judah, a land unfamiliar to her. Yet she did not simply depend on her mother-in-law Naomi. Even after confessing that Naomi’s God would be her God, Ruth did not merely wait for God’s help. She went out to the field all day to glean grain and shared what she gathered with Naomi. In this way, she faithfully served her mother-in-law and lived with her.
The Bible repeatedly speaks about this. Everyone in Bethlehem knew about Ruth’s conduct, and they also recognized that God would repay her for what she had done. In fact, among the Ten Commandments that the Lord God gave to his people, the commandment with a promised blessing is the fifth commandment: to honor one’s parents. “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.” (Exodus 20:12)
Dear beloved believers, those who fear God do not take lightly the parents who gave birth to them and raised them. A life that honors parents is a life that remembers the grace received from God. No matter how the world changes, the command to honor our parents remains God’s unchanging command and his promised blessing. Parents’ Day is coming soon. I bless you to take courage today and express your love to your parents.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- How can I honor my parents or family in a practical way this week?
- Do I express gratitude only in my heart, or also through words and actions?
- Where is God inviting me to show faithful love, like Ruth did for Naomi?
7. π Prayer
Lord, teach me to honor You through the way I love and serve my family.
Help me not only to speak words of faith, but to live them through daily faithfulness.
Give me wisdom, humility, and courage to honor my parents and care for those You have placed in my life.
May my ordinary acts of love reflect Your grace.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Ruth 2:17-23, ESV).
17 So she gleaned in the field until evening. Then she beat out what she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley. 18 And she took it up and went into the city. Her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned. She also brought out and gave her what food she had left over after being satisfied. 19 And her mother-in-law said to her, “Where did you glean today? And where have you worked? Blessed be the man who took notice of you.” So she told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked and said, “The man’s name with whom I worked today is Boaz.” 20 And Naomi said to her daughter-in-law, “May he be blessed by the LORD, whose kindness has not forsaken the living or the dead!” Naomi also said to her, “The man is a close relative of ours, one of our redeemers.” 21 And Ruth the Moabite said, “Besides, he said to me, ‘You shall keep close by my young men until they have finished all my harvest.’ ” 22 And Naomi said to Ruth, her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, lest in another field you be assaulted.” 23 So she kept close to the young women of Boaz, gleaning until the end of the barley and wheat harvests. And she lived with her mother-in-law.
