✝️ Would You Stand With Jesus When It Costs You? | Matthew 27 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to teach you what faithful discipleship looks like when following Jesus costs something.
2. π April 4, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
True discipleship stays with Jesus not only in glory, but also in shame.
3. ✝️ Matthew 27:57-66
Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb. The next day, the chief priests and Pharisees secured the tomb by sealing the stone and setting a guard because they remembered Jesus’ words about rising after three days.
4. π Key Verse
And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away (v. 60).
5. π Reflection
Joseph of Arimathea was a rich man, yet he was also a good and righteous man who lived in expectation of the kingdom of God. Although he was a member of the Jewish council, he was also a disciple of Jesus. He was the kind of man who voiced his opposition even during the hastily arranged trial held at the high priest’s house in the middle of the night. Such a man made the courageous decision to take Jesus’ body and bury it in his own tomb. He went to Pilate and boldly asked for Jesus’ body, and eventually received it. Then, together with Nicodemus, he wrapped Jesus’ body in linen cloths, laid it in his own new tomb, and rolled a large stone across the entrance.
As we read this story, there are two important details that we should not overlook. First, while all the other disciples fled in fear, Joseph publicly revealed where he stood. When people mocked Jesus, treating Him as a failed Messiah and a rebel worthy of crucifixion, Joseph clearly stood on Jesus’ side by asking for His body. Second, Joseph placed the body of a man executed as a criminal for treason in his own new tomb. That tomb was likely a pure and honorable burial place prepared for himself and his family. Yet he chose to place there the body of Jesus, whom others considered defiled and wanted nothing to do with.
Beloved saints, are you disciples of Jesus only when He performs mighty miracles and receives the praise of the crowds, or are you also His disciples when He is mocked and executed as a criminal? Could it be that we, too, choose discipleship depending on the situation? Joseph, who offered his own new tomb for the body of Jesus, whom the whole world considered unclean, deserves to be remembered as much as the woman who broke the alabaster jar. Today, let us remember the faithfulness of Joseph, a true disciple of Jesus, and earnestly pray that we, too, may become such disciples.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Do I follow Jesus only when it feels safe, inspiring, or rewarding?
- Where am I tempted to stay quiet about my faith because of fear or pressure?
- What is something valuable or deeply personal that I need to surrender to Jesus?
- How can I stand with Jesus faithfully in my workplace, school, friendships, or daily decisions?
7. π Prayer
Lord, teach me to follow You with courage and sincerity.
Help me stay faithful not only in joyful moments, but also in costly ones.
Give me the heart of Joseph, who honored Jesus when others turned away.
May my life boldly show that I belong to You.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Matthew 27:57-66, ESV).
57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus. 58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate ordered it to be given to him. 59 And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud 60 and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the tomb.
62 The next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate 63 and said, “Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, ‘After three days I will rise.’ 64 Therefore order the tomb to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away and tell the people, ‘He has risen from the dead,’ and the last fraud will be worse than the first.” 65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard of soldiers. Go, make it as secure as you can.” 66 So they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
