⚖️ Why Doesn’t God Judge Sin Immediately? | Psalm 103 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. 🙏 Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to help you remember His grace and understand His heart today.

2. 📅 April 21, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

God’s justice is never separated from His mercy.

3. ✝️ Psalm 103:1-11

David calls his soul to bless the LORD and not forget all His benefits—God forgives sin, heals, redeems, renews, and surrounds His people with steadfast love and mercy. The LORD works righteousness and justice for the oppressed and reveals His ways and mighty acts to His people. He is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and He does not deal with us according to our sins.

4. 📖 Key Verse

He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities (v. 10).

5. 📝 Reflection

There was once a man we met during street evangelism. He appeared very gentle and courteous. When our team approached him and asked whether we could take a moment to share the good news, he gladly agreed. However, while we were sharing the gospel, the moment he heard the words, “All people are sinners,” his expression suddenly hardened and he became angry. He insisted that even if everyone else were sinners, he himself was not. Then he demanded that we prove it if we were going to claim that he too was a sinner. Surprisingly, the method of proof he asked for was very simple: if he were truly a sinner, then shouldn’t lightning immediately fall from heaven and punish him on the spot?

Many people misunderstand God’s character, especially His justice. One common misunderstanding is this: if God is righteous, then He must surely punish human sin—so why are sinners still walking around freely in the world? Some even argue that if God were truly just, He should send down lightning at the scene of serious crimes and punish offenders immediately. Others go so far as to claim that if punishment were always immediate and without exception, there would be no sinners left in this world.

Beloved saints, the fact that wrongdoers are not punished instantly does not mean that God is idle or unrighteous. God’s justice is never separated from His love. Therefore, He is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love. He does not always accuse, nor does He keep His anger forever (vv. 8–9). May you praise this God today and remember all the grace He has poured out upon you until now.

6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Have I mistaken God’s patience for His approval of my sin?
  • Is there an area of my life where I need to return to God with honesty and repentance?
  • Have I been living more in guilt than in gratitude?
  • How can I reflect God’s mercy and patience in my relationships today?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Lord, thank You for not treating me as my sins deserve.

Help me never to take Your patience lightly.

Teach me to return to You with repentance, gratitude, and trust.

May I reflect Your mercy to others today.

Amen.

Scriptures

📖 (Psalm 103:1-11, ESV).

1 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, 3 who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, 4 who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, 5 who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The LORD works righteousness and justice for all who are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways to Moses, his acts to the people of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. 9 He will not always chide, nor will he keep his anger forever. 10 He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
