2. π April 14, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
The LORD alone reigns, and every false god must bow before Him.
3. ✝️ Psalm 97:1–12
The LORD reigns as the Most High over all the earth, so the whole world is called to rejoice and worship Him before His righteousness and glory. Idols are put to shame, but those who love the LORD are called to hate evil and are preserved and delivered by Him. God gives light and joy to the righteous, and therefore His people should rejoice in Him and give thanks to His holy name.
4. π Key Verse
Worship him, all you gods! (v. 7b)
5. π Reflection
This is a story I once heard from a missionary serving in a remote region of Africa. There was a village of a minority tribe to whom he desperately wanted to preach the gospel. However, the village chief strongly opposed the gospel and severely persecuted the missionary. Because of this, the missionary could do little but pray for that village with tears for a long time.
One day, as he was passing by the village again, he decided he would simply stop in and offer a brief greeting to the chief before moving on. But there he heard unexpected news: the chief had fallen seriously ill and was bedridden. Though he feared the chief might reject him even more harshly in such a condition, the missionary gathered his courage and went to the chief’s tent. The moment he saw the chief grimacing in pain, his heart was overwhelmed with compassion. He felt a strong burden to pray for him.
So the missionary asked, “Would it be all right if I prayed right now to the God I serve for your healing?”
The chief lay there for a while, staring at him, and then replied, “Pray to the god you serve.” Fearing that the chief might change his mind, the missionary and his fellow workers quickly prayed for his healing. Yet nothing seemed to happen immediately, and the missionary’s team eventually left the village.
After quite some time had passed, the missionary had occasion to travel through that village again. Remembering the chief for whom they had prayed, he stopped by to ask how he was doing. There he heard an astonishing report.
The chief said that after receiving prayer that day to “the God the missionary served,” he could not find peace in his heart. But astonishingly, the pain whose cause had been unknown disappeared completely overnight. Through that experience, he came to realize that the God whom the missionary served was greater and truer than the god he himself had worshiped. From then on, he had been waiting for the missionary to return, because he wanted everyone in the village to believe in the God the missionary served.
Beloved brothers and sisters, do you believe that the Lord God alone is the true God? Do you believe that every false god of this world will one day bow before the Lord? And do you believe that this great God is our Father? May today be a day of rejoicing that the Lord Jehovah, who is higher than every god of this world, is truly our Father.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- What tends to compete with God for first place in my heart right now?
- Where am I tempted to find security or identity apart from the Lord?
- What would it look like for me to rejoice in God instead of being ruled by fear or pressure?
7. π Prayer
Lord, You alone reign over all the earth.
Help me recognize the false gods that compete for my heart.
Teach me to hate evil, trust Your rule, and rejoice in You alone.
Fill me with Your light, joy, and peace today.
Amen.
Scriptures
π (Psalm 97:1-12, ESV).
1 The LORD reigns, let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad! 2 Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne. 3 Fire goes before him and burns up his adversaries all around. 4 His lightnings light up the world; the earth sees and trembles. 5 The mountains melt like wax before the LORD, before the Lord of all the earth.
6 The heavens proclaim his righteousness, and all the peoples see his glory. 7 All worshipers of images are put to shame, who make their boast in worthless idols; worship him, all you gods!
8 Zion hears and is glad, and the daughters of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O LORD. 9 For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.
10 O you who love the LORD, hate evil! He preserves the lives of his saints; he delivers them from the hand of the wicked. 11 Light is sown for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name!
