πͺ What Jesus Says About Fake Faith | Matthew 23 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to show you the true condition of your heart and to make you clean from the inside out.
2. π March 17, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God cares not only about how we look on the outside, but about who we truly are on the inside.
3. ✝️ Matthew 23:25-39
Jesus rebukes the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy, saying that though they appear righteous outwardly, inwardly they are full of greed and lawlessness and cannot escape judgment. He warns that they will reject and persecute God’s messengers like their ancestors, and that this generation will face judgment. Yet Jesus still expresses His compassionate desire to gather Jerusalem to Himself.
4. π Key Verse
“how are you to escape being sentenced to hell?” (v. 33b)
5. π Reflection
Although we do not hear much of it these days, until a few years ago it was still common to see evangelists near major subway stations in downtown Seoul holding signs that read, “Jesus: Heaven. Unbelief: Hell.” Many people criticized this kind of evangelism as a public nuisance. Some churches dismissed it as outdated, harsh, and insensitive to the times, while many pastors argued that evangelism should not make people feel uneasy. As a result, those who proclaimed “Jesus: Heaven. Unbelief: Hell” were welcomed neither by society nor by many within the church.
However, Scripture clearly teaches that if there is salvation, there is also judgment. Jesus Himself declared that whoever believes will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned (Mark 16:16). Today’s passage goes even further. Jesus solemnly warns that even the Jewish religious leaders, who guarded and taught the Law, would not escape the judgment of hell if they practiced evil.
Therefore, I would like to ask those who criticize evangelists holding signs that say, “Jesus: Heaven. Unbelief: Hell”: if their cry is considered a nuisance, then what should we proclaim to the world instead? Should we preach a vending-machine gospel that dispenses blessings? Should we hide hell and speak only of heaven? Or should we offer a gospel with no condemnation at all—only praise and reward?
Beloved saints, the gospel is not only a message of salvation but also a message of judgment. Do not overlook the first recorded words of Jesus in Matthew: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17b). If we are children of God, we must remember that the judgment of hell is real, remain watchful, repent continually, and practice what is good. Both our outward life and our inward heart must be clean, and we must listen carefully to the voices of those who faithfully proclaim God’s Word. I sincerely pray that today, too, we may live as righteous saints before the Lord.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where is there a gap between how I appear on the outside and what is really happening in my heart?
- Am I more focused on looking like a faithful Christian than actually becoming one?
- What would repentance and inner honesty look like for me today?
7. π Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal what is unclean within me.
Forgive me for caring more about appearances than true holiness.
Make me honest, humble, and faithful before You.
Cleanse me from the inside out and lead me in the way of repentance.
Help me respond to Your warning with humility and to Your compassion with gratitude.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 29 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the monuments of the righteous, 30 saying, ‘If we had lived in the days of our fathers, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.’ 31 Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets. 32 Fill up, then, the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, you brood of vipers, how are you to escape being sentenced to hell? 34 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35 so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. 36 Truly, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.
37 “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing! 38 See, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’ ” (Matthew 23:25-39, ESV).
