πŸ‘‘ Jesus, Humble King, Chose a Donkey | Matthew 21 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask Jesus to help you see Him clearly today—not as a hype-filled hero, but as the humble King who fulfills God’s Word.

2. πŸ“… March 7, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

God fulfills His Word through the humble King—and He invites our ordinary obedience into His extraordinary plan.

3. ✝️ Matthew 21:1–11

As Jesus neared Jerusalem, he sent two disciples to bring a donkey and her colt, instructing them to say, “The Lord needs them,” and the owner would release them at once. This happened to fulfill the prophet’s word that Zion’s humble king would come riding on a donkey, and the disciples did exactly as Jesus directed. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, crowds spread cloaks and branches and shouted “Hosanna,” and the stirred city asked who he was; the crowds answered, “Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth of Galilee.”

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet , saying, (v. 4)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

After the long uphill road from Jericho to Jerusalem, Jesus arrives at the foothills of the Mount of Olives. Scholars say that from this spot, Jerusalem comes fully into view at a glance. The disciples likely looked down on the magnificent city and felt a stirring sense of awe. Yet at that very moment, Jesus speaks words that interrupt their emotion. Suddenly, in verses 2–3, He tells them to bring two donkeys. He does not describe paying a price or formally borrowing them. He simply instructs them to say, “The Lord needs them.”

In Jesus’ day, authorities commonly rode horses. Especially in Roman society, riding a horse functioned as a symbol of noble status and power. But Jesus does not tell them to find a horse. Instead, He directs them to a specific place where a mother donkey and her colt will be, and He tells them to speak to the owner and bring them. Though it seems unexpected, it is also mysterious—and Matthew explains it briefly in verse 4: this happens in order to fulfill what was spoken.

Beloved saints, many people in the church unexpectedly long to experience miracles. Some confess that if they could witness a miracle, they would believe more strongly. But miracles are only one means by which God fulfills His Word; they cannot replace the Word itself. We sometimes treat miracles as more mysterious than the written Scriptures, but the role of a miracle is closer to a sign that testifies the text is true. Therefore, I bless you today to draw nearer to God’s Word through QT, to focus more deeply on it, and to live it out.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where am I tempted to chase “horse-level” status—image, influence, recognition—when Jesus calls me to humility?
  • What might Jesus be saying, “The Lord needs it,” about in my life right now (my time, my schedule, my resources, my gifts, my plans)?
  • In what area do I keep waiting for certainty before obeying, and what is one clear step of obedience I can take today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Jesus, You are the promised King who fulfills God’s Word.

Forgive me for chasing hype, control, or status.

Teach me to recognize Your voice and obey even when it feels inconvenient.

Use my ordinary life to serve Your purposes, and help me live humbly under Your reign.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2 saying to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me. 3 If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and he will send them at once.” 4 This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 “Say to the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.’ ” 6 The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them. 7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them. 8 Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. 9 And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10 And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11 And the crowds said, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.” (Matthew 21:1-11, ESV).
