π When You’re Sinking, Do This π | Matthew 14 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask Jesus to help you recognize His presence in your storm—and to trust His voice more than your fear.
2. π February 18, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Faith isn’t the absence of storms—it’s fixing our eyes on the living Son of God in the middle of them.
3. ✝️ Matthew 14:22-36
Jesus sent the disciples ahead by boat, dismissed the crowds, and went up the mountain alone to pray. As the boat was battered by waves, Jesus came walking on the sea; Peter walked toward him at Jesus’ command but began to sink when afraid, and Jesus caught him, rebuking his doubt, and the wind ceased when they entered the boat. The disciples worshiped him, confessing, “Truly you are the Son of God,” and at Gennesaret many who touched the fringe of his garment were healed.
4. π Key Verse
And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.” (v. 33)
5. π Reflection
Some people claim that nature behaves as if it has a will of its own. Yet most agree that phenomena like waves and wind have neither life nor intention. However, in today’s passage, the waves and the wind submit to Jesus as He walks on the water. Even more astonishing, Peter, upheld by Jesus’ word, defies gravity and walks on the water as well. If waves, wind, and water have no will of their own, how should we understand this scene in which they still obey Jesus?
First, we must clearly acknowledge this truth: God is the Creator. God created the heavens and the earth in the beginning (cf. Gen 1:1). And even now, God reigns over all things (cf. Ps 103:19). God is both Creator and King—He rules as the Sovereign. Therefore, it is neither strange nor accidental that Jesus, bearing the authority of God, comes into this world and commands the wind, the waves, and even the water. Rather, this is a natural and compelling revelation of who Jesus truly is. That is why the disciples, who witnessed it all from the boat, finally confess, “Truly you are the Son of God!”
Beloved saints, do you believe that Jesus is alive even now? Yes—you are doing well. Do you also believe that the living Jesus is able to work for us today? Yes—you are doing well. And do you believe the gospel—that Jesus is the Son of God who died on the cross and rose again for us, so that we may receive eternal life? Our faith begins by trusting in the name of the Son of God, the Creator who will reign forever. So today, let us joyfully share this gospel of faith with the world.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- What is the “wind” stealing my focus right now (stress, money, relationships, work, anxiety, uncertainty)?
- Where is Jesus inviting me to take one small step of obedience—His “Come”—instead of waiting until I feel fearless?
- When I start sinking, do I reach for Jesus quickly, or do I try to save myself first?
- What would worship look like today—not just singing, but trusting Jesus as the Son of God in real life?
7. π Prayer
Jesus, when I’m overwhelmed, help me recognize that You are near.
When fear rises and I start to sink, teach me to cry out, “Lord, save me,” and trust Your hand.
Fix my eyes on You more than on the wind.
And let my life worship You as the Son of God.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
34 And when they had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret. 35 And when the men of that place recognized him, they sent around to all that region and brought to him all who were sick 36 and implored him that they might only touch the fringe of his garment. And as many as touched it were made well (Matthew 14:22-36, ESV).
