When Following Jesus Isn’t Comfortable π₯ | Matthew 8 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask Jesus to show you what real discipleship looks like—beyond comfort, convenience, or timing.
2. π January 30, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Following Jesus means choosing Him over comfort, stability, and even good excuses.
3. ✝️ Matthew 8:14-22
Jesus healed Peter’s mother-in-law and many others oppressed by demons or sickness, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy. When crowds gathered, a scribe and another disciple expressed desire to follow Him, but Jesus warned that discipleship requires sacrifice. He taught that following Him takes priority above comfort and even socially expected duties.
4. π Key Verse
“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (v. 20)
5. π Reflection
Becoming a Christian means becoming a follower of Christ. The title “Christian” was not a name early believers gave themselves; rather, it was the name others used because they were deeply impressed by the lives of those who followed Christ (cf. Acts 11:26). Therefore, Christians are people who carry and spread the fragrance of Christ wherever they go.
Yet this fragrance is not always sweet or pleasant, for the Christian life is not meant to be easy or comfortable. This is because the life of Jesus Christ Himself was not easy or comfortable. Jesus personally carried our weaknesses and bore our diseases (v.17). He was despised, rejected, and acquainted with suffering. The pain and burden He carried were, in fact, ours (cf. Isa 53:3–4). Thus, the life of one who follows such a Christ cannot be a life driven by the pursuit of wealth, honor, or personal comfort.
Dear brothers and sisters, becoming a Christian is not a light decision. It requires the resolve to follow Jesus even when we have no place to lay our head. It is the choice to cling to Scripture and the Holy Spirit not casually, but with the seriousness of one who lays down their life. Renew that commitment today. Are you a Christian?
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where do I expect Jesus to make my life comfortable rather than faithful?
- What excuses or delays keep me from obeying Jesus?
- In what area is Jesus asking me to trust Him beyond my desire for stability or control?
7. π Prayer
Jesus, teach me what it means to follow You with honesty and courage. Help me value Your presence above comfort, stability, or perfect timing. Give me a heart that obeys You today—one step at a time. Amen.
Scriptures
π 14 And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever. 15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him. 16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick. 17 This was to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah: “He took our illnesses and bore our diseases.”
18 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around him, he gave orders to go over to the other side. 19 And a scribe came up and said to him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.” 20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” 21 Another of the disciples said to him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” 22 And Jesus said to him, “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.” (Matthew 8:14-22, ESV).
