Ask–Seek–Knock πŸ”‘ God Is Not a Genie | Matthew 7 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to teach you what it means to trust Him—not as a genie, but as a good Father.

2. πŸ“… January 27, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Prayer is not about getting our will done, but learning to trust God’s will.

3. ✝️ Matthew 7:1-12

Jesus teaches us not to judge others, urging us first to deal with the sin and blindness in our own lives before correcting others. He reveals God as a good Father who generously gives good things to those who ask, seek, and knock with sincere hearts. Therefore, Jesus calls us to live by the Golden Rule—treating others as we desire to be treated—which fulfills the Law and the Prophets.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (vv. 7-8).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

The story of Aladdin is undeniably charming. When he rubs the magic lamp, the genie appears, helps a poor street boy win the heart of Princess Jasmine, and even gains his own freedom in the end. Stories like this make us smile and make us wish we had such a lamp—a magical escape from the harsh reality of life.

However, for Christians, this story can be spiritually dangerous. The Bible is not a magic lamp, and God is not a genie. A genie must grant any wish to be freed, but the almighty God of Scripture is incomparable to such a being. Yet, when we read today’s passage—“ask, seek, knock”—we may be tempted to treat God as if He exists to fulfill our desires, just as Aladdin used the genie to get what he wanted.

Beloved brothers and sisters, the story of Aladdin is nothing more than a man-made tale. But the Father Jesus teaches us about is the living God who exists from eternity past to eternity future. Jesus tells us that when we pray with confidence according to God’s will, He will answer. The keyword is not “my will,” but “His will.”

So today, come to God in faith. Do not be bound by what you see or by your circumstances. God is not a genie who exists to serve our wishes—He is our sovereign Father. What we need is faith, and when we place our trust in Him, our lives will stand firm regardless of the situation.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Have I treated God like someone who should fulfill my wants?
  • What areas of my life is God asking me to trust His will rather than my own?
  • Who is God calling me to treat with grace, patience, or kindness today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, help me trust You as my good Father, not as someone who merely grants my wishes.

Align my heart with Your will, and teach me to pray with faith and surrender.

May I love others the way You have loved me.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.

7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!

12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets (Matthew 7:1-12, ESV).
