January 16, 2026 Today’s passage reminds us: True repentance produces visible fruit—not empty words or religious status. 3. ✝️ Matthew 3:1-10 John the Baptist preached in the wilderness, calling people to repent because the kingdom of heaven was near, fulfilling Isaiah’s prophecy. He baptized many in the Jordan as they confessed their sins. When Pharisees and Sadducees came, John warned them to bear fruit in keeping with repentance, not rely on heritage, for judgment was near. 4. π Key Verse Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire (v. 10). 5. π Reflection In John the Baptist’s time, Jews believed they didn’t need baptism because they were God’s chosen people.
