✝️ When the Future Feels Uncertain, Trust Jesus’ Words | Matthew 24 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. 🙏 Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask Jesus to replace your fear with trust in His unshakable word.

2. 📅 March 20, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

When everything else feels uncertain, Jesus’ words remain completely trustworthy.

3. ✝️ Matthew 24:29-35

After the tribulation, cosmic signs will appear, and the Son of Man will come with power and great glory. He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call to gather His elect from every direction. Jesus then points to the fig tree: just as its leaves show that summer is near, these signs show that His coming is near. Though heaven and earth will pass away, His words will never pass away.

4. 📖 Key Verse

“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away” (v. 35).

5. 📝 Reflection

There were people who claimed that the world would come to an end on December 31, 1999. Because the days of tribulation spoken of in Scripture were, in their view, already continuing, and because the signs of the Son of Man were appearing throughout the world, they zealously proclaimed that at midnight on January 1, 2000, Jesus would return to this earth with the sound of a great trumpet. Believing that Jesus would gather His chosen people at that time, they gathered beforehand in a certain place, spending the whole night praising and praying as they waited for the Lord’s return. Yet when that moment finally came, nothing happened, and we still remember it.

Throughout Christian history, many people have tried to discover the exact date and hour of Jesus’ return. Some have analyzed the parables and prophecies of Scripture numerically in order to calculate a specific date and time. Others have claimed to receive revelation from the Holy Spirit during deep prayer and have gathered in advance those they believed were chosen to prepare for and welcome the final day together. Why, then, do people become so obsessed with that date and hour which even Jesus said He did not know? (cf. Matthew 24:36)

Perhaps the greatest reason is fear. They are afraid of the words that say all the nations of the earth will mourn at the end. They are afraid that they may not stand firm in faith amid the pain and suffering of tribulation. And they are afraid that, in the end, they may not be found among the chosen.

But beloved saints, I hope you will not be overly anxious. Jesus promised that His words would never pass away. Among those words is the promise that, for the sake of the elect, the days of tribulation will be shortened (Matthew 24:22). He also promised that He will remember every righteous deed we have done on this earth (Matthew 25:35–36). Above all, He promised that He would be with us always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20). Therefore, we can boldly confess, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6)

So today, let us turn our attention away from our efforts to avoid the days of tribulation and toward the promise of salvation in the returning Jesus Christ. When we hold firmly to that promise, all fear departs and hope takes its place.

6. 💬 What does this passage speak to you today?

  • What fear about the future has been weighing on me lately?
  • Where am I tempted to seek control instead of trusting Jesus?
  • How can I anchor my heart in Christ’s promises this week?

7. 🙏 Prayer

Lord, when my heart feels anxious about the future, teach me to trust Your word.

Help me stand firm when life feels uncertain.

Fill me with hope as I wait for Your return.

Amen.

Scriptures

📖 29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates. 34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. 35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away (Matthew 24:29-35, ESV).
