π± Mustard Seed Faith: Move Your Mountains π️ | Matthew 17 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask Jesus to show you what you’re trying to do in your own strength—and invite Him into what feels impossible today.
2. π February 25, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Real faith isn’t about having “more confidence”—it’s about depending on Jesus, and letting that dependence shape how you act.
3. ✝️ Matthew 17:14-27
Jesus heals a boy by rebuking the demon, and explains that the disciples could not cast it out because of their little faith; faith like a mustard seed can “move” a mountain, and nothing will be impossible for them. In Galilee, Jesus foretells that the Son of Man will be delivered, killed, and raised on the third day, and the disciples are greatly distressed. In Capernaum, Jesus teaches that “the sons are free” from the two-drachma tax, yet to avoid offense He provides a shekel from the first fish Peter catches to pay for both of them.
4. π Key Verse
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” (v. 20)
5. π Reflection
This is a testimony from a missionary who served long ago in a remote field.
After some time in ministry, he decided to build a church where the believers could worship together. But as is often the case on the mission field, the budget was tight. He had to buy land and construct a building with limited resources, so finding the right location became his greatest challenge. Land he liked exceeded the budget, and land that fit the budget did not feel right.
Eventually, he found a plot that was both affordable and appealing. Yet there was a clear reason it was cheaper than the market price: a fairly high hill stood within the southern portion of the property. The hill seemed useless—no trees grew there, and nothing could be planted. Still, since other options were hard to find, he purchased the land with the hill included and began building the church.
As time passed, that hill increasingly troubled him. Around that same period, he was preparing a Sunday sermon and meditating on Jesus’ words: even faith as small as a mustard seed can move a mountain (Matthew 17:20). Taking the passage as it was, he began praying that if he truly had mustard-seed faith, God would remove that hill. He did not tell anyone; he simply prayed quietly and earnestly on his own.
After several months, something unexpected happened. A construction company came to him and offered to pay for the hill. Nearby, they needed soil for foundational work and landfilling, and the amount of earth in that hill was exactly what they required. Hallelujah!
The rest unfolded just as you might imagine. The hill disappeared, and the church was left with a level, orderly piece of land. Moreover, the money received from selling the hill’s soil was used to help build a mission center on the very spot where the hill had stood.
Beloved brothers and sisters, the signs of Jesus recorded in Scripture are true. And even if “moving a mountain” was an idiomatic expression in Jesus’ day—referring to accomplishing what appears impossible—the truth Jesus taught about faith and prayer remains real.
What “mountain” stands in your way today? Has it silenced your prayers or filled your heart with complaint? If praying for that mountain to move aligns with God’s will, God will surely make a way. Therefore, let us examine whether our prayers follow His will. And if they do, let us persevere without losing heart. God will answer, just as He has promised.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- What is my “mountain” right now (stress, anxiety, temptation, burnout, relationship conflict, family pressure, finances, career uncertainty)?
- Where have I been relying on my effort more than relying on Jesus?
- If mustard-seed faith is “dependence,” what is one small step of dependence I can take today? (Pray honestly, ask for help, confess sin, obey the next step, reach out to a trusted believer.)
- Am I discouraged because God hasn’t moved the mountain yet? What might God be shaping in me while I wait?
7. π Prayer
Jesus, I bring You what I cannot fix.
Forgive me for calling self-reliance “faith,” and teach me mustard-seed trust that depends on You.
Help me surrender my mountains to Your will, choose humility and love over insisting on my rights, and take the next step of obedience with You.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, 15 said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
22 As they were gathering in Galilee, Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men, 23 and they will kill him, and he will be raised on the third day.” And they were greatly distressed.
24 When they came to Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma tax went up to Peter and said, “Does your teacher not pay the tax?” 25 He said, “Yes.” And when he came into the house, Jesus spoke to him first, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do kings of the earth take toll or tax? From their sons or from others?” 26 And when he said, “From others,” Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 However, not to give offense to them, go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.” (Matthew 17:14-27, ESV).
