Jesus’ Compassion Changes Everything 🌿 | Matthew 9 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask Jesus to help you see His compassion—and understand what He desires to do in your life today.

2. πŸ“… February 3, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Jesus sees us with compassion—and He invites us to join His mission.

3. ✝️ Matthew 9:27-38

Jesus healed two blind men according to their faith and delivered a mute man oppressed by a demon, though the Pharisees criticized His works. He went through cities and villages teaching, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease. Seeing the helpless crowds, He had compassion on them and urged His disciples to pray for more laborers for the plentiful harvest.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd (v. 36).

5. πŸ“ Reflection

When we read news headlines about someone who has committed a horrific murder, most people react with outrage and condemnation. Even if we hear about the person’s difficult upbringing or painful environment and momentarily feel some sympathy, it does not justify or excuse the crime. A judge may grant a reduced sentence, but the crime itself does not disappear. No one pities a murderer who has taken a life.

The Bible teaches that we are such sinners. We are enemies who have rebelled against God, and according to Jesus, even hatred in the heart is a form of murder (Isa 53:6; Rom 5:10; Matt 5:21–22). We are utterly unworthy of forgiveness—yet Jesus has compassion on us. He comes to us as our Shepherd, teaches God’s Word, proclaims the gospel, and heals every sickness and pain. In the end, He chose to bear our sins and died on the cross to secure our forgiveness.

Dear brothers and sisters, remember that Jesus has had compassion on you. Instead of condemning and judging us, He became the sacrifice that brings our forgiveness. And remember that He is risen and continues to call us as our Shepherd today. When we embrace this truth, our eyes are opened, oppression is broken, and our spiritual sickness and pain are healed. Therefore, let us praise God the Father who sent us Jesus.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where do I feel “harassed and helpless” right now—and how is Jesus showing compassion to me in that place?
  • Who around me is hurting, and how might Jesus be inviting me to show His compassion to them?
  • What keeps me from joining His mission—fear, distraction, apathy, busyness?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Jesus, thank You for seeing me with compassion.

Open my eyes to see the people around me the way You do.

Give me Your heart, Your boldness, and Your love.

Make me a willing worker in Your harvest today.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 27 And as Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, “Have mercy on us, Son of David.” 28 When he entered the house, the blind men came to him, and Jesus said to them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” They said to him, “Yes, Lord.” 29 Then he touched their eyes, saying, “According to your faith be it done to you.” 30 And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly warned them, “See that no one knows about it.” 31 But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

32 As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him. 33 And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.” 34 But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

35 And Jesus went throughout all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; 38 therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” (Matthew 9:27-38, ESV).
