Following Jesus Isn’t Always Easy ⚔️ | Matthew 10 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask Jesus to help you understand what loyal, courageous discipleship looks like in a world that often pushes back.

2. πŸ“… February 6, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

Following Jesus requires ultimate loyalty—even when it creates tension or costs us something.

3. ✝️ Matthew 10:34-42

Jesus teaches that His coming brings decisive division, even within families, because following Him requires supreme loyalty and self-denial. Only those who take up their cross are worthy of Him, and those who lose their life for His sake will truly find it. Anyone who receives His disciples or offers even small acts of kindness will by no means lose their reward.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.” (v. 34)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

Experiencing the grace of salvation through faith in the name of Jesus happens immediately. Salvation does not require a waiting period until certain qualifications are met. Anyone who hears the gospel and believes is at that very moment transferred from death to life (cf. John 5:24).

Therefore, those who receive salvation may also experience the world’s hatred right away. Conflict with those who still belong to the world is to be expected. Even today, such realities are unfolding across the globe: children confined and beaten to death by their own families for confessing faith in Christ, believers expelled from their homes and communities, and entire villages burning down the homes of Christian families and threatening their lives.

To believe in Jesus often means facing conflict, separation, and persecution even within one’s own family or community.

Dear brothers and sisters, is believing in Jesus worth facing such costs? Do you trust in the promise of Jesus that there will be praise and reward from God for those who stand firm in their faith? As you reflect today, may you once again choose to follow Jesus regardless of the challenges that may come.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where do I feel tension or resistance when I try to follow Jesus faithfully?
  • What might “taking up my cross” look like in my relationships, career choices, or lifestyle?
  • What small, intentional act of love or hospitality can I offer in Jesus’ name today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Jesus, give me the courage to love You above everything else.

Help me follow You with a loyal, steady heart—even when it’s hard.

Show me how to bless others with simple, faithful acts in Your name.

Shape my life to reflect Your Kingdom.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 34 “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” (Matthew 10:34-42, ESV).
