⚠️ Are You Missing the Point? | Matthew 16 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask Jesus to open your eyes—not just to notice things, but to perceive what He is really saying.
2. π February 22, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Spiritual maturity isn’t just remembering facts—it’s perceiving Jesus’ meaning and responding in obedience.
3. ✝️ Matthew 16:1–12
The Pharisees and Sadducees demanded a sign from heaven, but Jesus rebuked them for failing to interpret the signs of the times and said no sign would be given except the sign of Jonah. When the disciples forgot to bring bread, Jesus warned them to watch out for the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees, but they mistakenly thought he was speaking about literal bread. Jesus reminded them of the feedings of the five thousand and four thousand, and they finally understood he meant the corrupting teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
4. π Key Verse
“Do you not yet perceive?” (v. 9)
5. π Reflection
Have you ever heard the saying, “Forgetfulness is God’s blessing and consideration”? Some claim it comes from Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil, while others say it appears as a line in a famous Hollywood film. Yet the exact source and context of the phrase, in the form we commonly use today, have been simplified as it has traveled through various channels. Still, it has become a comforting sentence for modern people weary from failures and regrets—almost like an encouragement to “forget and start again.” For those exposed to long-term stress-related conditions such as depression or panic disorder, it can sound even more appealing.
However, Scripture does not speak positively of forgetfulness in this sense. Rather, God commands us not to forget but to remember (cf. Deut 6:12; Ps 103:2). The Lord’s Supper and the various feasts we observe in worship are also means of grace designed to help us remember God’s love and His mercy. Yet there is something even more important than mere remembering. Like Jesus’ question today, what we truly need is understanding—insight (cf. Luke 24:45). This is because genuine understanding moves the heart and leads to obedience.
Beloved congregation, the purpose of QT is to remember the Word, understand it, and move toward obedience. Remembering, understanding, and obeying the Word is the rightful path for God’s children. But Sunday sermons alone are not enough for this. We must personally read the Word every day, receive illumination by the Holy Spirit, and apply it to our lives. No matter how diligently we watch workout videos, our health will not improve unless we exercise ourselves. In the same way, spiritual change does not come merely from hearing; it comes when we stand before the Word daily. Therefore, I bless you to move each day into the place of obedience through QT.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- What situation am I so stressed about that I might be mishearing what Jesus is saying?
- What “leaven” (small influence, lie, habit, or mindset) is quietly shaping my thoughts more than Scripture is?
- Where do I need to move from “I know” to “I perceive”—from information to obedience—today?
7. π Prayer
Lord Jesus, forgive me for how easily I focus on surface problems and miss Your deeper message.
Open my eyes to perceive what You are doing and what You are warning me about.
Protect my heart from corrupting “leaven,” and give me the humility to obey quickly.
Holy Spirit, turn today’s insight into real change in my choices, habits, and relationships.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 1 And the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and to test him they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered them, “When it is evening, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red.’ 3 And in the morning, ‘It will be stormy today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times. 4 An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.” So he left them and departed.
5 When the disciples reached the other side, they had forgotten to bring any bread. 6 Jesus said to them, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 7 And they began discussing it among themselves, saying, “We brought no bread.” 8 But Jesus, aware of this, said, “O you of little faith, why are you discussing among yourselves the fact that you have no bread? 9 Do you not yet perceive? Do you not remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 10 Or the seven loaves for the four thousand, and how many baskets you gathered? 11 How is it that you fail to understand that I did not speak about bread? Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees (Matthew 16:1-12, ESV).
