You Can’t Serve πŸ‘‘ God and Money πŸ’° | Matthew 6 Devotional (7-Step QT)

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.

Take a deep breath.

Ask God to reveal what it means to serve Him with an undivided heart.

2. πŸ“… January 25, 2026

Today’s passage reminds us:

You can’t follow Jesus fully while serving another master. Only one can lead your life.

3. ✝️ Matthew 6:16-24

Jesus teaches that fasting should be done in secret before God, not performed publicly to gain human attention. God, who sees in secret, will reward those who fast sincerely. He also warns against storing earthly treasures that can fade or be stolen, urging believers instead to store heavenly treasures that last forever. A person’s heart always follows what they treasure. Jesus then explains that a healthy eye brings light to the whole body, while a bad eye brings darkness. Finally, He declares that no one can serve two masters—you cannot serve both God and money. Every person must choose whom they truly serve.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” (v. 24)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

Even without using the grand term “materialism,” most people desire to have more money and pursue it in various ways. Some try to increase their wealth through honest and positive means, while others rely on unhealthy or questionable methods. Some even buy lottery tickets or visit gambling places, hoping for luck.

Christians also rarely believe that having wealth is wrong. Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were all wealthy, and Job received twice as much material blessing after his trials.

However, Scripture never teaches that people became righteous because they were blessed. Instead, it teaches that the righteous were the ones who received blessings. Their godliness did not come from their possessions but from their faith. The Bible shows that those who enjoyed God’s blessings worshiped God alone. No one served both God and wealth.

Dear brothers and sisters, do you desire to have abundant resources? Then serve God, the owner of all the world’s wealth. He may satisfy you with Himself alone, or He may entrust you with great resources to carry out His love and justice.

But always remember: wealth can never replace God.

Are you serving two masters today? May you choose to serve God alone.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where do I feel torn between serving God and pursuing comfort or control?
  • What “treasure” is quietly shaping my decisions or emotions?
  • How would my life look different if God alone were my Master?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, help me recognize anything that is competing for my heart.

Teach me to trust You more than I trust money, success, or security.

Make my heart undivided so that I may follow You with freedom and joy.

Be my one and only Master today.

Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 16 “And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18 that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, 23 but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! 24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money (Matthew 6:16-24, ESV).
