Why Obedience Brings Peace π | 1 John 5 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you understand what loving Him really looks like today.
2. π January 8, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
Loving God means obeying His Word—and His commands are never burdensome.
3. ✝️ 1 John 5:1–12
Everyone who believes Jesus is the Christ is born of God and loves God’s children. Loving God means keeping His commandments, which are not burdensome, and through faith we overcome the world. Jesus came by water and blood, and the Spirit testifies to this truth. God’s testimony declares that eternal life is in His Son—whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son does not have life.
4. π Key Verse
For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome (v. 3).
5. π Reflection
I once heard this story at a seminar on “Keys to a Healthy Marriage.” One speaker shared his experience after retiring following 40 years of marriage. Staying home after retirement led to frequent conflicts with his wife. The biggest disagreement? Who would take out the trash once a week. Before retirement, he routinely did it on his way to work, but afterward, he expected his wife—still working—to handle it, while she wanted him to continue. One day, he realized, “I love my wife—why can’t I honor her simple request?” From then on, he gladly did it, and peace returned to their home.
Dear friends, do you love God? Then keep His commandments. If listening to and honoring your spouse brings peace to your home, how much more should we obey the Word of the God who loved us first? Today, choose obedience and experience true peace.
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where do I struggle to obey God’s Word?
- Do I see His commands as burdens—or as a path to freedom?
- How can I show my love for God through obedience today?
7. π Prayer
Lord, thank You for loving me first.
Help me obey Your Word with joy, not obligation.
Teach me to love You through my actions today.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 4 For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
6 This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life (1 John 5:1-12, ESV).
