Living as Children of God π | 1 John 2 Devotional (7-Step QT)
7-Step QT Notes
1. π Quiet Time
Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to remind you of His love and help you live as His child today.
2. π January 4, 2026
Today’s passage reminds us:
God’s love makes us His children—so let’s live like it.
3. ✝️ 1 John 2:28-3:12
John urges believers to remain in Christ so they can stand confident when He returns. God’s incredible love calls us His children, and though our future glory isn’t fully revealed, we will be like Him when He appears. Those who hope in Christ pursue purity. Sin is lawlessness, but Jesus came to take away sin and destroy the devil’s works. True children of God practice righteousness and love one another—not like Cain, whose evil led him to murder his brother.
4. π Key Verse
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are (v. 1a).
5. π Reflection
When I was a kid, I remember wishing my neighbor’s dad was mine. He bought his son every toy and gave him lots of allowance—I was jealous. My mom scolded me, but my dad just smiled. Looking back, I realize how immature that was.
John reminds us that we already have the greatest Father—God Himself. His love is so deep that He calls us His children. That’s our identity. We don’t need to envy the world or chase what others have. Instead, we’re called to live like God’s children: avoiding sin, loving others, and doing good in everything we do.
So today, let’s ask: Am I living like a child of God? Am I reflecting His love in my relationships and choices?
6. π¬ What does this passage speak to you today?
- Where do I struggle to live out my identity as God’s child?
- How can I show God’s love to someone today?
- What’s one way I can choose righteousness over sin this week?
7. π Prayer
Father, thank You for calling me Your child.
Help me live in a way that reflects Your love and righteousness.
Keep me close to You and away from sin.
Amen.
Scriptures
π 28 And now, little children, abide in him, so that when he appears we may have confidence and not shrink from him in shame at his coming. 29 If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him.
1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.
11 For this is the message that you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one another. 12 We should not be like Cain, who was of the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own deeds were evil and his brother’s righteous (1 John 2:28-3:12, ESV).
