Romans 14:13–23 Devotional | Choose Love Over Freedom—Build Up Others

Why Love Matters More Than Freedom πŸ’Ž

  3. ✝️ Romans 14:13-23

  4. πŸ“– For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died (v. 22).

  5. πŸ“ Culture promotes self-centered freedom, but Paul calls believers to prioritize love over personal rights. If your choices harm another’s faith, let them go. Christians are summoned to build up others and pursue peace, pleasing God and strengthening community. True love sacrifices preference for unity and spiritual growth.

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to give you a heart that values others above your own preferences.

2. πŸ“… October 7, 2025

Today’s passage reminds us: Love means laying down your rights for the sake of others.

3. ✝️ Romans 14:13–23

Paul challenges believers to stop passing judgment and avoid putting stumbling blocks in others’ paths. Even if something is “okay” for you, if it hurts a brother or sister, don’t do it. Why? Because Christ died for them. Our freedom should never destroy someone’s faith. Instead, pursue peace and mutual edification.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died.” (v.15)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

Culture says: “Do what makes you happy.” Paul says: “Do what builds others up.” Love sometimes means giving up your rights for the sake of someone’s conscience.

This isn’t weakness—it’s Christlike humility. Jesus gave up His life for us; can we not give up a preference for someone’s spiritual good?

Ask yourself: Is my freedom causing someone else to stumble? If yes, love calls me to let it go. True strength is choosing peace over pride.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Do I value my preferences more than someone’s spiritual health?
  • How can I pursue peace and build others up this week?
  • What’s one area where I need to lay down my “right” for love’s sake?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, teach me to walk in love, not pride.
Help me lay down my rights for the sake of others.
Make me a peacemaker who reflects Your heart.
Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 13 Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. 14 I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for anyone who thinks it unclean. 15 For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat, do not destroy the one for whom Christ died. 16 So do not let what you regard as good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. 18 Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men. 19 So then let us pursue what makes for peace and for mutual upbuilding. 20 Do not, for the sake of food, destroy the work of God. Everything is indeed clean, but it is wrong for anyone to make another stumble by what he eats. 21 It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble. 22 The faith that you have, keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who has no reason to pass judgment on himself for what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if he eats, because the eating is not from faith. For whatever does not proceed from faith is sin (Rom 14:13-23, ESV).
