Children of Promise: God’s Sovereign Choice Explained (Romans 9:1–13)

 God’s Sovereign Choice

  3. ✝️ Romans 9:1-13

  4. πŸ“– This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring (v. 8).

  5. πŸ“ God’s promises are fulfilled by His sovereign choice, not human customs. Isaac and Jacob, though not firstborn, inherited the covenant. Likewise, Gentiles became children of promise through faith in Christ. Salvation is never earned by birth or effort—it is a gift of God’s mercy. Live in gratitude today.

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause. Take a deep breath. Ask God to remind you that His love and calling are based on His grace, not your performance.

2. πŸ“… September 23, 2025

Today’s passage reminds us: God’s promises are fulfilled by His choice, not by human effort.

3. ✝️ Romans 9:1–13

Paul explains that not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel. God’s promise flows through His chosen line—not by human birth order or effort, but by His sovereign will. Isaac, not Ishmael. Jacob, not Esau. God’s plan is driven by His mercy and purpose.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.” (v. 8)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

In the ancient world, the firstborn son usually inherited everything. But God flipped the script: Isaac, not Ishmael. Jacob, not Esau. Why? To show that His promises depend on His grace, not human status or effort.

Today, we live in a culture obsessed with achievement—grades, jobs, followers. It’s easy to think God loves us more when we perform well. But this passage reminds us: Your identity as God’s child is not earned; it’s given by His promise.

So stop striving for approval. Rest in the truth that you are chosen, loved, and secure in Christ—not because of what you’ve done, but because of what He has done.

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Where do you feel pressure to “earn” your worth?
  • How would your life change if you truly believed God’s love is based on His promise, not your performance?
  • Who in your life needs to hear this truth today?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Father, thank You that my identity is rooted in Your promise, not my performance. Help me rest in Your grace and live with confidence as Your child. Teach me to share this truth with others who feel they’re not enough. Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 1 I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— 2 that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh. 4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.

6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring. 9 For this is what the promise said: “About this time next year I will return, and Sarah shall have a son.” 10 And not only so, but also when Rebekah had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, 11 though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God’s purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls— 12 she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 As it is written, “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” (Rom 9:1-13, ESV).
