  4. πŸ“– But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code (v. 6).

  5. πŸ“ Paul illustrates the law’s limit through marriage: its authority ends at death. In Christ, we’ve died to the law and now live by the Spirit, whose way brings eternal life beyond death. Will you cling to rules that cannot save or embrace the Spirit’s freedom and life? The choice is yours.

7-Step QT Notes

1. πŸ™ Quiet Time

Pause.
Take a deep breath.
Ask God to help you understand what it means to live free in the Spirit, not bound by rules.

2. πŸ“… September 17, 2025

Today’s passage reminds us:
You’ve died to the old way—so why live like you’re still chained to it?

3. ✝️ Romans 7:1–6

Paul uses a marriage analogy: when a spouse dies, the other is free from the law of marriage. In the same way, when we died with Christ, we were released from the law’s authority. Now, we belong to Christ and serve in a new way—the way of the Spirit, not the old written code.

4. πŸ“– Key Verse

“But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code.” (v. 6)

5. πŸ“ Reflection

Rules can’t change your heart. They can tell you what’s wrong, but they can’t make you love what’s right. That’s the law’s limit.

Paul says we’ve died to that old system. We’re not trying to earn God’s approval by checking boxes anymore. Instead, we live by the Spirit—motivated by love, not fear.

Think about it: Are you living like someone in a dead relationship—obligated, joyless, just going through motions? Or are you living like someone in a new relationship—free, loved, and eager to please?

6. πŸ’¬ What does this passage speak to you today?

  • Do I still relate to God as if He’s a strict rule-keeper?
  • Where do I feel pressure to perform instead of resting in grace?
  • What would it look like to serve God out of love, not obligation, this week?

7. πŸ™ Prayer

Lord, thank You for setting me free from the old way of rules and fear.
Help me live in the new way of the Spirit—joyful, willing, and full of love.
Teach me to serve You because I want to, not because I have to.
Amen.

Scriptures

πŸ“– 1 Or do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to those who know the law—that the law is binding on a person only as long as he lives? 2 For a married woman is bound by law to her husband while he lives, but if her husband dies she is released from the law of marriage. 3 Accordingly, she will be called an adulteress if she lives with another man while her husband is alive. But if her husband dies, she is free from that law, and if she marries another man she is not an adulteress.

4 Likewise, my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. 5 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions, aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 6 But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code (Rom 7:1-6, ESV).
